Paranormal Romance Review: The Dark Vampire by Kate Baxter (Last True Vampire #3)

Description:
The grave threat to the tortured race of vampires is greater than ever in Kate Baxter's THE DARK VAMPIRE. An unforgettable, intensely emotional, and hot series for fans of J.R. Ward, Nalini Singh, Lara Adrian and Larissa Ione.

Centuries ago, the vampire race was almost destroyed. Now, salvation rests upon one - the last true vampire.

For centuries, Jenner has been plagued by the shadows of his past. Now, a newly-turned vampire, he stalks the night like a wild predator, unable to satisfy his insatiable desires. Until a beautiful vampire sets his soul on fire...

Bria is pure innocence, hidden her whole life from a merciless enemy determined to hunt her down. When things become perilous, safety comes in the form of a fearsome bodyguard - Jenner.

One fateful night, Bria is saved by her vampire protector and a blazing connection is sparked. But surrendering to the powerful call of passion means breaking free from the shackles of their pasts. And with the war against the slayers more savage than ever, they must fight to survive. For the vampire race depends on it.

My Thoughts:
If you like the Black Dagger Brotherhood, you'll like this series. I usually like stories about vampires and magic and I have enjoyed each book in this series. Each book is about a different couple, but a larger story runs through all of the books so it makes sense to start with book one, The Last True Vampire. In this book we have Jenner who is a recently turned vampire and he is pretty much out of control. Bria has been sheltered and she is tired of it. She is staying at Mikhail's when Jenner finds her and is tethered. He holds himself back from her because he doesn't feel worthy of her which frustrates her. They have to find a way to make it work. I love characters and hope the books keep coming.

Review: The Dark Space by Mary Ann Rivers and Ruthie Knox

Description:
College senior Winnie Frederickson has accomplished nothing in four years but summa cum laude and the power of invisibility.

A professor’s kid, carelessly popular Cal Darling feels like he’s been going to college forever. If there’s anything left to learn, he’s not going to find it in the classroom.

The theater department’s “make-out class” is famously hard to get into, and what goes on between the twelve people who take it every spring is an annual topic of speculation. Winnie needs one more arts class to appear well-rounded for fellowships. Cal is just … bored.

The dark space – a class, a place, a state of mind – is ready for them both.

My Thoughts:
This one is a little different. Winnie is the girl who gets good grades that no one notices. Cal is the popular guy. They end up in the same class. Then things take a turn. Things get a little odd. They're in college. They're exploring and figuring out themselves, each other, and the direction they want to take in life. I like the writing, but you do need an open mind for this one.

Review: How to Reprimand Your Rock Star by Mina Vaughn

Description:
In this fun and saucy romance novel, all-star college basketball player Thea dominates on the courts—and off—with a rock star who is determined to win her over.

Thea is a star basketball player at UConn on track to be Rookie of the Year. That is, if she can stay focused on the game. Lately that hasn’t been going so well, as her knee has been bothering her. But that’s not the only thing on her mind…

Ever since rock star Keaton Lowe surprised her in the girl’s locker room, Thea can’t stop thinking about him. On top of his status and enticing ways, he seems to know everything about her. But some of his actions cross the line, and Keaton needs to be punished. Will Thea keep her head in the game, or get distracted by her other favorite pastime—reprimanding her rock star?

My Thoughts:
I completely loved this! Thea is a basketball star who is struggling at the moment. Then she meets her rock star who lets her know exactly what he wants, and it helps her figure out what she wants, too. Eventually she learns that her life just works better when she controls what can be controlled. It's a bit about discovery as Thea embraces her inner Domme. Keaton is very swoony. He's known as the Heartbreaker of the Century, but now all he wants is to worship his Goddess. And for her to tie him up. This is just a super fun read with great characters. Don't let the BDSM part scare you away. It's part of their relationship and it seems very normal. I just want more of these.

Review: The Golden Locket by Primula Bond

The Golden Locket (The Unbreakable Trilogy #2) by Primula Bond

Description:
Temptation would test them…

The second novel in the Unbreakable Trilogy, The Golden Locket follows Gustav and Serena to New York.

Ensconced in their Manhattan penthouse, all seems blissfully happy for Gustav and Serena. Still in the first flush of love, they have every satisfaction they could need.

But as they enjoy their New York pleasure ground, ghosts start to emerge from Gustav’s past, and when his damaged younger brother, Pierre, comes back into his life, he brings with him a dangerous threat…

With temptation waiting at every turn, can Gustav and Serena survive all the excitement that the Big Apple holds?

The sexy sequel to Primula Bond’s Sunday Times Top 20 bestseller, The Silver Chain. Perfect for fans of erotic romance.

My Thoughts:
This is the second book in the Unbreakable trilogy and picks up soon after The Silver Chain, which I loved. Gustav's brother Pierre is around now and they are trying to put the past behind them. Serena is getting photo commissions and explores her more adventurous side. This one seemed more erotica than erotic romance and was a bit out of my comfort zone. Certain parts seemed gratuitous at first. However, as I read on I realized that it is important to Serena and Gustav's relationship to explore boundaries and trust. They have a very intense, unique relationship and I can't seem to look away. A new mystery at the end leaves me anxious for the third and final book.

Review: Caught Up in You by Roni Loren

Caught Up in You (Loving on the Edge #4) by Roni Loren

Description:
The girl who has spent her life running is about to be caught . . . by love.

After a shaky past, Kelsey LeBreck’s future is looking good. She’s been saving money for culinary school with her earnings from The Ranch, a private BDSM resort. Even better, she’s landed a day job where she can practice baking and flirt with her favorite customer. However, having secret fantasies about Wyatt Austin is where it has to end. If there’s one thing Kelsey knows can derail her, it’s a relationship. But when a danger from her past threatens to steal her fresh start, the intense executive may be the only one who can help her.

Wyatt doesn’t have room on his agenda for dating, but something about the pretty young waitress stirs desires he thought were long buried. So when he needs someone to pose as his girlfriend at an important business retreat and finds out Kelsey needs to go off the grid for a while, he can’t resist making her an offer. Soon, Kelsey learns that Wyatt’s power in the boardroom is no match for his power in the bedroom, and she wonders if her heart will survive. Because Wyatt Austin is a man who gets what he wants, and now he wants her.

My Thoughts:
Wow. I loved this. This is the fourth in the series, but the first I've read. I admit, I've been going back and forth on this series for a while. I thought it looked good, but being about a BDSM resort, it's a bit out of my comfort zone. I won a signed copy from the author, so I gave it a shot. Although it is the fourth and referred to events and had characters from previous books, it stood well on its own. I do, however, want to read the previous books.
Kelsey and Wyatt are both secretly fantasizing about the other, but think they can never have a relationship. Until things happen and they discover they are not so different. I love them as a couple and seeing them go from arrangement to relationship. There is just so much emotion and angst and of course lots and lots of steam. It did cause me to blush and fan myself a few times, no lie. There is also some suspense. If that sounds like your thing, definitely check it out.

Review: Hitori by Nicholas Forristal

Hitori by Nicholas Forristal

Description:
In the 8th century, Bishamon, Japanese god of war sends his initiate back to Earth. She is to prove her worth by doing the job that she has trained so long for, to defend Japan and its people from the evils of the world. This is her story.

My Thoughts:
I loved this. It is a fast-paced, historical fantasy adventure story with lots of action and mythical creatures. A well-told story that really puts you in the time period, without bogging you down with too many details. A great story if you haven't read Chronicles of M. But if you have, it gives you some background on a certain strange warrior woman who has an odd relationship with her sword. I just keep thinking how many years there are between the end of this story and Chronicles of M...

Review: How to Discipline Your Vampire by Mina Vaughn

How to Discipline Your Vampire by Mina Vaughn

Description:
Cerise Norrell, Type A substitute teacher by day, is ready to quit being a domme. Despite her best intentions, none of her partners can keep up with her scene fetish and attention to detail—let alone her demand that they have a costume and set waiting every afternoon by the time she’s home from school.

Over a dozen potential subs have left her in the past year, but just when Cerise thinks it’s impossible—that she’ll have to go back to vanilla relationships, or be alone forever—she meets William, who wants to make all her fantasies come true. He turns her home into a geisha’s dream apartment, a concert hall with a grand piano (which he uses to play an original composition while wearing a tuxedo), and even rents an abandoned loft for a zombie apocalypse scene—complete with canned goods.

But there’s something strange about William. Well, a lot of strange things. He must be absurdly rich, since he can afford to provide extravagant costumes and props on a daily basis without having to leave work early. He must be insane, since he puts up with Cerise’s over-the-top demands. And most importantly, he doesn’t redden when he’s spanked, and his skin is as cool as satin sheets. When Cerise discovers she’s become domme to the infamous “Chilly Willy,” as he’s known throughout the BDSM urban lore, she begins to find out there’s a whole lot more to her handsome submissive than a creative mind and a hard body.

And when it’s William, ironically, who starts pressing Cerise to give him the kind of commitment she’s never given anyone, it’ll take everything she has to work through her issues, confront her past, and learn to be vulnerable.

My Thoughts:
So funny and awesome. I just loved this. The author describes it as "a BDSM paranormal romance with a comedic twist." It is all that and more. Cerise is Mistress Cherry, a Domme with a role playing fetish who is a substitute teacher by day. She is very demanding and has trouble keeping a submissive. William is a submissive who is just looking for the right Domme. A bit silly and a lot steamy with a sweet romance at the center. Just a really fun and different read.

And if you need more encouragement to get it, here is an excerpt:

Then, I saw him.
An absolutely beautiful specimen was making his way towards my little table.
I sipped the soda again, careful to not smudge my lipstick.  Typically, Dommes were easy to find at mixers—the redder the lipstick, the stricter the rules.  Mine was crimson on the border of downright arterial.  I had hoped that my selection would weed out the weaklings in the pack.  I touched it up just in case it had faded and bent down to put the compact back into my bag.  By the time I leaned back up, he was in front of me.
"Hello," he said sheepishly, eyes downcast.
This was a good sign. Subs ought to act their place at events like this—unlike that last jackass.  Please, please be up to my challenge.
"Sit," I said to him, gesturing. His posture was erect, but guarded. This man was very stylish—a corduroy blazer over a graphic tee, paired with perfectly fitted dark jeans. Urban, hip. Thank God no leather—I didn't care how long I’d been involved in this sort of thing, I would never get into leather.  Unless it was required for a scene...then it would be acceptable.  He folded his hands neatly in his lap, and began the conversation in a surprisingly self-deprecating manner.
"I have something," he said, eyes still downcast, "I should tell you before we begin."
I leaned forward, ready to berate him for speaking out of turn, and not letting me begin our conversation. The nerve of these guys.
Then again, this was speed dating and I didn’t want to waste time with a lecture, so I allowed him to begin.
"I've never been kept by a Domme. I have been advised to tell you in advance a few of my qualities that have been turn-offs. Firstly, I can tolerate any kind of pain.”
Odd, but not a deal-breaker. I did the "go on" gesture, rolling my pointer finger.
“I flinch at nothing, nor do I bruise or redden. Many women have found this off-putting, if you like that sort of thing."
"Um, I'm a substitute teacher. I dish out pain all day. I'm not that kind of Domme," I explained to him, trying to put him somewhat at ease. His posture relaxed somewhat.
I probably shouldn’t have disclosed my occupation to this guy, but what was he going to do?  Show up at every secondary school in the Seacoast region wearing assless chaps?
"I also have very cold hands," he said, trying to hold back his smirk. "It's been problematic in nearly every encounter I have had. Here, feel." I reached out my hands and touched his.
Freezer burn.
I recoiled slightly, but caught myself and steadied my hand.  I said nothing. His eyes remained downcast.
He was stunningly handsome, I appraised, examining his face. Strong jaw, straight nose, blue-black tousled hair, and lips full enough to almost be considered feminine.
Almost.
"I don't mind cold hands. I'm from Nevada-- I love to feel the cold compared to the heat I grew up in. It's refreshing," I said. Oh boy, here comes the hurt, I told myself as I handed him my list of needs and wants. "I do, however, have a very long list of requirements, and I'm afraid I've scared everyone off, too. I'm just as used to rejection as you seem to be," I laughed. Half the local community thought it was great that I was a strong woman who won't settle for anything less than what I want, and the other half thought I was an insane bitch. "In fact, they call me the deal breaker." He smirked again, a small dimple forming in his chin.
He was wickedly handsome.  If the room was less well-lit, I’d be tonguing his earlobe right now.
"Alright," he said, glancing at the dossier. "Hit me." He laughed at his choice of words for the situation. I did, too.
I shifted into uber-Domme mode and breathed in deep, ready for my long-winded explanation.
Last chance, Cerise.
"The requests I make of my subs are simple. Show up at my house Monday through Thursday at 2:00 pm sharp. On Monday through Wednesday, I will give you role play prompts.  You must come up with the details, props, and costumes. You will email me details about the scenarios while I'm on my lunch break so I can arrive home in character. When I get home at three, you will be in costume and in character. Whatever outfit you may have for me will be hanging in my bathroom. We will perform the scene from three o' clock until whenever I feel it's over. You will then eat dinner with me and return home. On Thursdays, you will create an original scenario.  You have free reign on those days, but please be creative. I may not be a Dominatrix in the traditional whips and chains sense, but I want your full subservience when you are with me. You will have three-day weekends to yourself." My voice was strict like a smack on the wrist with a wooden ruler. I hoped he understood that just because he was creating one scene per week, he was not in charge of where it went. I knew my methods were unconventional, but hey, whatever gets you off, right?
He listened intently, head cocked to the side, eyes still not leaving the table.
"Is that all?" he asked.
I gasped to myself. A taker? Usually guys weren't down with the hours AND the financial demands of coming up with new costumes and props four days a week. Then again, judging by this guy's clothes, he could afford it. Don't think I didn't notice the curvy R's on his Rock and Republic jeans. That cut retailed at $259 at Nordstrom.
And yes, in addition to being a Domme, I was a serious denim whore.
"No, that's not all," I said, worried that this will be the deal breaker. "You must come up with our first scenario right now. Don't let me down." I expected him to either tell me to f--- off, or to walk away in a daze after spending several minutes blathering his way through a half-assed attempt to come up with something that may excite me.
Of course, when hearing I was a teacher, nearly every potential sub told me the scenario where he was failing my class and wanted extra credit.
And would do "aaaanything" for it.
So, the men who usually made it to this round never made it out. Unoriginal pricks.
"I think I have one you’ll like, if I may," he said politely.
I must be dreaming. "Proceed," I said, both anticipating and dreading what was going to come out of his lips next. Please don't be a student scene…
"I'm a vampire who has endured decades of loneliness. All I want is a woman who I can worship—who will look past all my flaws. I need a fearless Dominatrix who will punish me for all my past misdeeds."
This guy was either insane, or a f---ing genius.
And to be perfectly honest, I didn't care.

Review: The Silver Chain by Primula Bond

The Silver Chain by Primula Bond

Description:
One dark evening in London, photographer Serena Folkes is indulging her impulsive side with a night-time shoot. But someone is watching her – mysterious entrepreneur Gustav Levi. Serena doesn’t know it yet, but this handsome stranger will change her life forever…

Serena is fascinated by Gustav, the enigmatic owner of the Levi Gallery, and she soon feels an irresistible pull of attraction. The interest is mutual, and Gustav promises to launch Serena’s photographic career at his gallery, but only if Serena agrees to become his exclusive companion.

To mark their agreement, Gustav gives Serena a bracelet to wear at all times. Attached to it is a silver chain of which he is the keeper. With the chain Gustav controls Serena physically and symbolically – a sign that she is under his power.

As their passionate relationship intensifies, Gustav’s hold on the silver chain grows stronger. But will Gustav’s dark past tear them apart?

A seductive and beautifully written novel for erotic romance fans. The Silver Chain is the first in the sexy, passionate and addictive Unbreakable Trilogy by Primula Bond.

My Thoughts:
The writing in this book pulled me in right away. I thought it was lovely. Serena is a very interesting character, to say the least. She had a traumatic childhood and her personality is kind of all over the place. She is trying to strike out on her own and ends up finding Gustav. He is a complicated guy with a troubled past. He seems to run hot and cold. It is fascinating to watch the dance these two go through as they figure out how to have a relationship. It gets quite steamy and is a fairly dark story at times. I think fans of dark erotic romance with enjoy this. The ending of this hooked me and has me looking forward to the next book. (But not to worry, there is no cliffhanger.)

Review: The Dominant by Tara Sue Me

The Dominant by Tara Sue Me

Description:
Nathaniel West doesn’t lose control.

As the playboy CEO of West Industries, he governs the boardroom during the day; as a strict dominant with exacting rules, he commands the bedroom at night. He never takes on inexperienced submissives, but when Abigail King’s application comes across his desk, he breaks his own restrictions and decides to test her limits.

Abby’s combination of innocence and willingness is intoxicating, and Nathaniel is soon determined to collar her as his own. As long as she follows his orders and surrenders herself fully to him, no one will get hurt.

But when Nathaniel begins falling for Abby on a deeper level, he realizes that the trust must go both ways—and he has secrets which could bring the foundations of their entire relationship crashing down...

My Thoughts:
I loved this book so much. I would call this more of a companion book than a true sequel, because it is the same story as The Submissive, just told from Nathaniel's point of view. There is so much going on with him that we don't see in The Submissive. It is definitely worth the read, but I recommend reading The Submissive first. Then you are wondering along with Abby what is going on with him. I loved both. People will compare it to Fifty Shades, but they are different. This is about an actual BDSM relationship. It is about finding your own normal; doing what works for you. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I still couldn't stop reading. Nathaniel is so conflicted it is heartbreaking. The next book, The Training will continue where the story left off. How can they have a BDSM relationship and still be a couple? I can't wait to find out.

Review: Selling Out by Amber Lin

Selling Out (The Lost Girls #2) by Amber Lin

Description:
Shelly Laurent escapes her life as a high-class escort, but against her better judgment she takes the scared young Ella with her. Framed for murder by her pimp and his dirty cops in retaliation, Shelly turns to the one man who could be her salvation: Detective Luke Cameron. She doesn’t know if she can trust him or if he’s just a mirage, but it's time for her to take a stand. Just one shot, make it count, she’ll fight Ella’s demons—and face her own.

Shelly throws light on the shadows of Chicago’s underworld, challenging everything she knew and the man she’s come to love. Together, a prostitute and a cop fight for truth stronger than secrets, hope deeper than deception, and a bond more enduring than betrayal.

My Thoughts:
After reading Giving It Up (review here) I wanted to know more about Shelly and was glad that she got her own story. I was so sad for most of this book. Shelly is not in a good place emotionally. She is trying to get out of "the life" as she calls it, but it is not easy. She wants to be with Luke, but doesn't think she really deserves him anyway. She has so many obstacles and Luke has some secrets of his own. They don't have an easy path and this is a very dark book, dealing with some heavy subjects. There are some lighter moments as well. Shelly is very sarcastic and funny. I highly recommend this one if you like your romance dark and gritty and angsty, with suspense and all sorts of steam.

Review: Lover At Last by J.R. Ward

Lover At Last (Black Dagger Brotherhood #11) by J.R. Ward

Description:
Qhuinn, son of no one, is used to being on his own. Disavowed from his bloodline, shunned by the aristocracy, he has finally found an identity as one of the most brutal fighters in the war against the Lessening Society. But his life is not complete. Even as the prospect of having a family of his own seems to be within reach, he is empty on the inside, his heart given to another....

Blay, after years of unrequited love, has moved on from his feelings for Qhuinn. And it’s about time: The male has found his perfect match in a Chosen female, and they are going to have a young—just as Qhuinn has always wanted for himself. It’s hard to see the new couple together, but building your life around a pipe dream is just a heartbreak waiting to happen. As he’s learned firsthand.

Fate seems to have taken these vampire soldiers in different directions... but as the battle over the race’s throne intensifies, and new players on the scene in Caldwell create mortal danger for the Brotherhood, Qhuinn finally learns the true definition of courage, and two hearts who are meant to be together... finally become one.

My Thoughts:
I have been looking forward to Qhuinn and Blay's story for a long time. They have been through so much in this series and deserved to be together. Granted, most of their problems could have been solved by sitting down and having a good, honest conversation. But they are both proud, stubborn males, so there is that. And really, they both had some things to work through before getting together. In short, I was not disappointed. And I was left with a nice case of warm fuzzies. Maybe not the most intense BDB book, but one of my favorites anyway.

Review: The Submissive by Tara Sue Me

The Submissive by Tara Sue Me

Description:
The first in Tara Sue Me’s seductive and scandalous series that has enthralled millions…

Abby King has a secret fantasy.

New York knows Nathaniel West as the brilliant and handsome CEO of West Industries, but Abby knows he’s more: a sexy and skilled dominant who is looking for a new submissive. Yearning to experience a world of pleasure beyond her simple life as a librarian, Abby offers herself to Nathaniel, to fulfill her most hidden desires.

After only one weekend with the Master, Abby knows she needs more, and fully submits to Nathaniel’s terms. But despite the pleasure he takes in Abby’s willing spirit, the Nathaniel hidden behind the rules remains cold and distant.

As Abby falls deeper into his tantalizing world of power and passion, she fears that Nathaniel’s heart may be beyond her reach—and that her own might be beyond saving…

My Thoughts:
This story pulled me in right from the beginning when Abby is standing in Nathaniel's office meeting with him about becoming his new submissive. She is new to the lifestyle and we see everything from her point of view. The story is about their relationship, without a lot of outside drama. BDSM is treated as a valid lifestyle choice and not as something that needs to be fixed. Nathaniel is a Dominant and Abby is a submissive and they just fit. With label-less cans and naked picnics, this is a fun, steamy, and emotional read and I recommend it. (Especially if you liked Fifty Shades of Gray. This story actually came first and I liked it more.)

Review: Wicked Intentions by Elizabeth Hoyt

Wicked Intentions (Maiden Lane #1) by Elizabeth Hoyt

Description:
A man controlled by his desires...

Infamous for his wild, sensual needs, Lazarus Huntington, Lord Caire, is searching for a savage killer in St. Giles, London's most notorious slum. Widowed Temperance Dews knows St. Giles like the back of her hand— she's spent a lifetime caring for its inhabitants at the foundling home her family established. Now that home is at risk.

A woman haunted by her past...

Caire makes a simple offer—in return for Temperance's help navigating the perilous alleys of St. Giles, he will introduce her to London's high society so that she can find a benefactor for the home. But Temperance may not be the innocent she seems, and what begins as cold calculation soon falls prey to a passion that neither can control—one that may well destroy them both.

A bargain neither could refuse.

My Thoughts:

This was a bit darker than I expected. Lazarus is a dark, tortured hero that reminded me a bit of a Georgian Christian Grey from FSOG. I liked the story, but I never quite understood why he chose Temperance to help him. I also thought there was too much of the secondary characters and storylines. It sets up other books in the series, but takes away from main story. Overall I liked it. If you like darker stories and historical romances, you may like this. Iwill probably check out the rest of the series if I find them at the library.

Review: Archangel's Blade (Guild Hunter #4) by Nalini Singh

Archangel's Blade (Guild Hunter #4) by Nalini Singh

Description:
The severed head marked by a distinctive tattoo on its cheek should have been a Guild case, but dark instincts honed over hundreds of years of life compel the vampire Dmitri to take control. There is something twisted about this death, something that whispers of centuries long past...but Dmitri's need to discover the truth is nothing to the vicious strength of his response to the hunter assigned to decipher the tattoo.

Savaged in a brutal attack that almost killed her, Honor is nowhere near ready to come face to face with the seductive vampire who is an archangel's right hand, and who wears his cruelty as boldly as his lethal sensuality...the same vampire who has been her secret obsession since the day she was old enough to understand the inexplicable, violent emotions he aroused in her.

As desire turns into a dangerous compulsion that might destroy them both, it becomes clear the past will not stay buried. Something is hunting...and it will not stop until it brings a blood-soaked nightmare to life once more...

My Thoughts:
I wasn't sure how well I would like this book because Dimitri was never one of my favorite characters and this is his story. In the first three books, he delighted in antagonizing Elena. In this story, we get to know him better. He's still not a nice guy, but at least we find out why. This is a very emotional and very dark story. Dimitri and Honor both have horrific pasts. They deserve their happy ending. I thought it was well done, although some might not agree.
I like this series, although the steam and gore factors are pretty high. I recommend reading in order unless you don't care about spoilers.

Review: Cougar by Skhye Moncrief

Cougar (Werescape #1) by Skhye Moncrief

Description:
Post-apocalyptic Earth: after alien invasion, AEI, 2064 AD, The Wild
With her beloved Shifter mate two days in Oregon's ground, Sierra must choose to live or die. She has two options--join a Shifter clan by choosing a mate or live alone. Life is dangerous for a woman after the extraterrestrial invasion. Women choose protection in a group or are sold into slavery, even to the aliens. She opts for the protection of the clan, him.

He's glorious. Empathetic. And resolved to mark her. He will not lose her. Jackal, the powerful right-hand Shifter of the clan's leader, her brother-in-law, is determined she will be taken care of properly as mates aren't easily come by. Especially in The Wild. But they just met, and she fights mating in her early stages of mourning. Honor-bound with a vow made over his brother's death bed to see her safe, he internally swears to win her love. Whatever it takes.

But she harbors a dangerous secret. Born a Cougar, she dares not risk revealing she's a Shifter, or bounty hunters will descend upon the remote mountain village to capture her for extraterrestrials. Villagers would die in the attacks. However, her Cougar rises up to claim Jackal for its mate. Shifter meets Cougar. Cougar claims her mate. Never-ending fireworks mark their raw attraction. But when the post-apocalyptic world is determined to tear them apart, will Normals, Shifters, or aliens win? Bet your money on COUGAR.

My Thoughts:
When I first started reading, I was a bit confused by the point of view. It is a little different. Once I figured it out, though, it was not a problem because I was so wrapped up in the story. This is an interesting twist on shifters. Aliens have invaded Earth and abduct people to do experiments on them, creating the Shifters.
Jackal is a great character. He never wanted to mate, but keeps his promise to his brother to protect Sierra. And Sierra is conflicted because she just lost her love, but her Cougar wants Jackal.
If you like steamy stories about Alpha males claiming their mates, I think you will like this one. This is the first in the Werescape series and I will definitely be reading more.

My Rating: ****
Steam Factor: !!!
*Notes: Strong language, talk of rape, and Shifters like to mate in their Wolfskin.

Review: Giving It Up by Amber Lin

Giving It Up by Amber Lin

Description:
Allie prowls the club for a man who will use her hard and then ditch her. Hey, it's not rape if she wants it. Instead she finds Colin, who looks tough but treats her tenderly, despite her protests.

He tempts her, but kindness and a few mindblowing orgasms aren't enough to put her back together again. Allie has no hope for a real relationship. Two years ago her best friend betrayed her in the worst possible way – she’d be stupid to trust a man again. Besides, she has her daughter to think of, the only good thing to have come from that dark night.

But when her rapist returns, threatening her sanity and custody of her daughter, Allie turns to Colin. Under his protection and patient touch, Allie begins to heal and learns to hope. Colin’s no saint, though, and his criminal past draws danger of its own. Allie must fight to protect her child and the man she loves, hoping her newfound power will be enough to save them all.

My Thoughts:
I was a little nervous when I started reading. This is a bit darker than I normally read. Allie is a character with a lot of issues and deals with them in ways that are pretty self-destructive. She is a damaged individual who is trying to cope with her past the best way she knows how. Then Colin comes along, who is an enigma but wants to take care of her. The story has explicit sex and language and deals with rape. If you are not offended by those things, I recommend it. I really liked the story and how it deals with the issues. Overall it is a story about healing and how damaged people can find happiness and love.

My Rating: *****

Review: Faefever (Fever #3)

Faefever: The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning

Description:
The New York Times bestselling author of Darkfever and Bloodfever returns to Dublin’s Fae-infested shores in a bold, sensual new novel. Hurtling us into a realm of seduction and shadows, Karen Marie Moning tells the enthralling tale of a woman who explores the limits of her mysterious powers as she enters a world of ancient sorcery—and confronts an enemy more insidious than she could ever have imagined.
He calls me his Queen of the Night. I’d die for him. I’d kill for him, too. When MacKayla Lane receives a torn page from her dead sister’s journal, she is stunned by Alina’s desperate words. And now MacKayla knows that her sister’s killer is close. But evil is closer. And suddenly the sidhe-seer is on the hunt: For answers. For revenge. And for an ancient book of dark magic so evil, it corrupts anyone who touches it.

Mac’s quest for the Sinsar Dubh takes her into the mean, shape-shifting streets of Dublin, with a suspicious cop on her tail. Forced into a dangerous triangle of alliance with V’lane, an insatiable Fae prince of lethally erotic tastes, and Jericho Barrons, a man of primal desires and untold secrets, Mac is soon locked in a battle for her body, mind, and soul.

As All Hallows’ Eve approaches and the city descends into chaos, as a shocking truth about the Dark Book is uncovered, not even Mac can prevent a deadly race of immortals from shattering the walls between worlds—with devastating consequences.

My Thoughts:
I had heard how good this series was, so I stuck with it, thinking it would get better. Now that I am finished with the third book, I am still not impressed. I don't like Mac and I don't like Barrons. The storyline is interesting but Mac's voice has just does not keep my interest. Reading is too much like work. Instead of being pulled along by the story, if feels more like I am hacking through a jungle with a machete. The twist at the end is the topper. I am done with this series. I did like Karen Marie Moning's Highlander series, but this one was not for me.
