The Hobbes Family by Dan O'Brien

Synopsis: The world had ended abruptly and without warning. How will a family navigate a world that seems bent on destroying them? Follow them in this exciting new serial adventure.

An excerpt from Hobbes Family:

As Michael looked out the broken window of the convenience store, he grimaced. The tall blue oaks that surrounded the building on two sides were dusted with frost; the ground was an amalgam of crystal sheets broken only by brave stalks of undergrowth that dared the frigid touch of the gales. The building wouldn’t serve as a long-term solution. However, it would be useful until the weather broke.

The trek out of the suburban areas began in the family Subaru. Highway 99 was so overrun with smoldering and abandoned vehicles that the Hobbes family was forced to make the remainder of the trek on foot. The winter months proved disastrous. Often, the snow levels came down into the valley for a day, sprinkling unsuspecting areas with brief, beautiful moments of frozen precipitation.

This was different.

A storm settled in the valley, trapped and angry.

When the sun managed to peek through the clouds above, it almost felt bearable. But the great star was soon obfuscated behind a gray wall once more, bloated and teeming with fury as a fresh zephyr of snow and blinding particulates dragged the valley.

Michael looked over at his wife. Susanna’s high cheekbones were prominent and the sallowness of her cheeks from periodic starvation saddened Michael as much as he was capable.

He hadn’t fared much better.

His beard grew in with dark clumps and gray patches; his bedraggled hair was curly in places despite its length. Were it on purpose, he imagined Susanna running her long fingers through it and calling it cute.

The store weathered the apocalypse.

Shelves remained intact for the most part, though they were barren fields. Coolers were popped open. Overturned cans, smashed and left for dead, littered the floor.

This was someone else’s last stand.

Review: Warrior Lord by Nancy J. Cohen

Description:
Pottery sculptor Erika Sherwood has no idea her televised wedding in Las Vegas is for real until an official confirms she and the stranger she’s just met are legitimately wed.

A Drift Lord and warrior of the Tsuran, Magnor tricks the redhead into marriage because she’s one of six women prophesied to save Earth. But as he’s forced into her company in their race against the apocalypse, he wonders if he risks his heart more than his life.

Can a free-spirited ceramic artist and a fierce swordsman trust each other enough to prevent disaster?

My Thoughts:
This is the third book in the Drift Lords series, but I think you would be fine starting anywhere. I love this series and I've been curious about Magnor with the one name, beard, sword, and cape. He may be a warrior, but he's no match for Erika Sherwood, the woman he meets and marries in a Las Vegas casino. As they work together to save the world, Erika comes to terms with the fact that she married an alien and has powers she didn't know about while Mangor tries to decide if he is worthy of having her for a wife. I loved both characters and enjoyed their story. A fun combination of action, adventure, sci-fi, mystery, mythology, and romance. I loved this book and cannot get enough Drift Lords.

Review: Shades of Virtue (Dragon Rising #2) by Jack Whitsel

Description:
Nearly two years have passed since the Harhn incursion. While the Hugue recovers from the devastation, the Order of the Secret Throne resumes their agenda. Lord Yannic and his armies march the breadth of the Vol Thaldane to rally the divided human fiefdoms into the new realm of Shyrlandia, while engaging the Braug tribes and Harhn Hordes still plaguing the region.
In the Hugue, a tournament champion is foreseen to have an impact on future events. The Council of Whispers dispatch Lady Lucia and her two apprentices, Dragana and Tallya to oversee the event. Amidst the spectacle of pageantry and martial prowess, Lucia must uncover the dark powers wishing to thwart the Order’s agenda, while supervising her headstrong apprentices. There is more at stake than winning a lady’s hand, for whoever wins the tournament will set events in motion that will forever impact the future realm of Shyrlandia, the Vol Thaldane, and the Hugue.

My Thoughts:

This is an exciting fantasy adventure story in a historical medieval setting. It has sorcery, battles, and jousting knights. There is a tournament and the winner will win the hand of Lady Basina and get her land. The story follows several different characters so it is difficult to predict the outcome. I enjoyed the funny insults and curses. Shades of Virtue is the second book in the Dragon Rising series. You don't have to have read the first, though it helps.

Review: The Zoastra Affair by Victoria Pinder

Description:
A hundred years from now, Earth has trading partners with alien beings, mostly humanoid. However, going into space has brought forth an unknown enemy who attacks Earth at will.

The Zoastra are part of the Earthseekers, an organization originally designed to go into space. Its new mission is to find Earth’s enemies.

Ariel, stuck on a Victorian planet, steals Grace’s body in order to get off the planet. Now Grace must get her body back before Ariel bonds with Grace’s husband, Peter. Then there is Cross, the man on a mission to find those who killed his family. Ariel is attracted to Cross, but she’s stolen someone’s life. What can she do?

My Thoughts:
The story is interesting. Ariel, stuck in someone else's body on an alien planet, is forced to steal another body in order to escape. Now Grace is stuck behind with no way to let her husband Peter know what has happened. As I said, interesting, but the writing tends to ramble on. Things are unnecessarily repeated over and over. The point of view switches between so many characters you're not sure who to care about. And the ending seemed a bit abrupt. Sci-fi fans who can get past the issues I had with the writing will enjoy the story.

Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg, New York Times bestselling authors of The Heist, return in this action-packed, exciting adventure featuring master con artist Nicolas Fox and die-hard FBI agent Kate O’Hare. And this time around, things go from hot to nuclear when government secrets are on the line.

Internationally renowned thief and con artist Nicolas Fox is famous for running elaborate and daring scams. His greatest con of all: convincing the FBI to team him up with the only person who has ever caught him, and the only woman to ever capture his attention, Special Agent Kate O’Hare. Together they’ll go undercover to swindle and catch the world’s most wanted—and untouchable—criminals.

Their newest target is Carter Grove, a former White House chief of staff and the ruthless leader of a private security agency. Grove has stolen a rare Chinese artifact from the Smithsonian, a crime that will torpedo U.S. relations with China if it ever becomes public. Nick and Kate must work under the radar—and against the clock—to devise a plan to steal the piece back. Confronting Grove’s elite assassins, Nick and Kate rely on the skills of their ragtag crew, including a flamboyant actor, a Geek Squad techie, and a band of AARP-card-carrying mercenaries led by none other than Kate’s dad.

A daring heist and a deadly chase lead Nick and Kate from Washington, D.C., to Shanghai, from the highlands of Scotland to the underbelly of Montreal. But it’ll take more than death threats, trained henchmen, sleepless nights, and the fate of a dynasty’s priceless heirloom to outsmart Fox and O’Hare.

Review
I loved this. From the first page, it was a fun, quick read. I loved the characters of Kate the ex-military FBI agent and Nick the thief and con artist. And they can't pull off what they do without the help of some other great characters: Joe, Boyd, Willie, Kate's dad Jack and his friends. There is plenty of action here as well. There are heists pulled off in a variety of creative ways, explosions, cons. This book is great if you are looking for something fun to read. Th Chase is the second Fox and O'Hare book. I missed the first but now I want to go back and read it!

Review: Hitori by Nicholas Forristal

Hitori by Nicholas Forristal

Description:
In the 8th century, Bishamon, Japanese god of war sends his initiate back to Earth. She is to prove her worth by doing the job that she has trained so long for, to defend Japan and its people from the evils of the world. This is her story.

My Thoughts:
I loved this. It is a fast-paced, historical fantasy adventure story with lots of action and mythical creatures. A well-told story that really puts you in the time period, without bogging you down with too many details. A great story if you haven't read Chronicles of M. But if you have, it gives you some background on a certain strange warrior woman who has an odd relationship with her sword. I just keep thinking how many years there are between the end of this story and Chronicles of M...

Review: The Golden Crystal by Nick Thacker

The Golden Crystal by Nick Thacker

Description:
In 1791, two men began planning the layout for the nation’s capitol city. One is shunned and resigns in disgrace, and the other is all but forgotten. Years later, an original copy of the plans–long thought to have been destroyed– is found, with hastily marked notations by Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.

During the second World War, American military scientists discover some fascinating properties of the hydrogen atom and its link to an ancient mystical number. The exact findings are never published, but a national laboratory is built in 1943 to further their research in covert silence. America is told it is a defense project, code-named ‘The Manhattan Project.’

An ego-maniacal entrepreneur and his company, Vilocorp, will stop at nothing to build the “perfect” human specimen. His firm’s research has been getting closer every day, but they seem to have uncovered a horrific, ancient secret that has been locked away for thousands of years.

Now, it’s up to Bryce to understand the mystery surrounding the events and ancient symbolism before Vilocorp unleashes a hellish fury upon the earth; one that hasn’t been seen for ages…

My Thoughts:
The concept is interesting with a mysterious and potentially dangerous substance that has been hidden and now everyone is trying to find.  I had a little trouble following at first. There are a lot of characters and the story jumps around quite a bit. As the story picks up, we end up traveling the world following clues to find the mysterious crystal. There is lots of action as Bryce ends up in the center of things, trying to make sure the crystal doesn't fall into the wrong hands.

Review: Warrior Rogue by Nancy J. Cohen

Warrior Rogue (Drift Lords #2) by Nancy J. Cohen

Description:
When fashion designer Jennifer Dyhr loses her lead actor for a video-game commercial, a replacement literally drops from the sky. Reluctant to let him leave, she hires him as a model for her studio. But when terrorists attack their flight home, Jen must awaken powers she didn’t know she had to protect them both. Will she be able to keep her heart safe from the sensual man beside her?

When space ops warrior Paz Hadar falls through a spatial rift onto Jen’s set, he soon realizes she is essential to his mission. Not only must he protect her, his success depends upon her special powers. But as they struggle to stay one step ahead of the enemy, he discovers that fighting his attraction to the lovely Jen is as much a challenge as keeping them both alive.

My Thoughts:
I am officially hooked on this series. It is  a combination of sci-fi, fantasy, mythology, action and steamy romance. Each book stands alone but are part of a larger story. I love the characters and I am caught up in the story. In this book we have Paz, the team communications specialist who was lost at the end of the first book. He ends up on Jen's set as she is ready to film a commercial for a video game. She agrees to help him get back to Florida but soon finds out all about Trollecks and the heritage that she never knew about and they need to work together. The story grabbed me from the beginning and didn't let go. Now I can't wait for the next book! This is something different and if you like steamy romance combined with action and fantasy, sci-fi or mythology, check out the Drift Lords.

Review: Warrior Prince by Nancy J. Cohen

Warrior Prince (The Drift Lords #1) by Nancy J. Cohen

Description:
When mythologist and Florida resident Nira Larsen accepts a job as tour guide for a mysterious stranger, she's drawn into a nightmare reality where ancient myths come alive and legendary evils seek to destroy her. To survive, she must awaken her dormant powers, but the only person who can help is the man whose touch inflames her passion.

After a dimensional rift in the Bermuda Triangle cracks open and an ancient enemy invades Earth, Zohar—leader of the galactic warriors known as the Drift Lords—summons his troops. He doesn't count on a redheaded spitfire getting in his way and capturing his heart. Nira has the power to defeat the enemy and to enslave Zohar's soul. Can he trust her enough to accomplish his mission, or will she lure him to his doom?

My Thoughts:
This book is such a mixture and once I got into it, I really enjoyed it. There are elements of sci-fi, fantasy, mythology, paranormal, and humor wrapped up in a steamy romance. There is quite a bit going on, but it works. Zohar is the leader of the Drift Lords and is trying to save Earth and everyone else and ends up getting involved with Nira who has special powers that she never knew about. A fun, action-packed, steamy read. The next book in the series is out now and I can't wait to get to it.

Review: The Forever Saga: Flash by Sean C. Sousa

Flash (The Forever Saga #1) by Sean C. Sousa

Description:
Long ago, the first reign of Grigori Geist nearly destroyed the Earth.

Returned from exile, Geist is secretly rebuilding his kingdom beneath Antarctica, assembling his robotic Vaucan race to war against mankind. Only one obstacle remains: the war hero known as Brian Renney.

Yet Brian is losing a battle against his fears. Scars of heart and mind linger from his days in Vietnam, fueling his failures as husband and father. This embitters his youngest son, Jason – a star athlete torn between pursuing the love of his life, and meeting the demands of a father who is far from the storied army captain he once was.

And all the while, Geist is coming for them.

In this dark hour, Brian and Jason encounter a war to end all others… and an unexpected ally who, once meant for evil, shall forever be a force for good.

My Thoughts:
Two words: giant robots. How cool is that? And there is an entire underground civilization under Antarctica that no one knows about. My inner geek loved this book. There is also another storyline that is a bit slower and gets more interesting as we figure out the purpose. The story also manages to blend in the issues of human trafficking and personal faith struggles along with the good vs. evil. There was a lot more to it than I was expecting. This book sets up the series and I can't wait to read more.

Review: The Waste Land by Simon Acland

The Waste Land by Simon Acland

Description:
The Waste Land chronicles the adventures of Hugh de Verdon, monk turned knight, during the extraordinary historical events of the First Crusade. He journeys from the great Benedictine monastery of Cluny to Constantinople, Antioch and Jerusalem. He encounters the Assassins, endures a personal epiphany and discovers the ‘truth’ behind the Holy Grail.

Hugh de Verdon’s tale is retold by a group of desperate Oxford professors, based on his autobiographical manuscript, discovered in their College library. Their humorous - and murderous story also provides a commentary on the eleventh century events and shows that they are perhaps not all they seem.

My Thoughts:
Well-written and entertaining. In Hugh's tale there are historical facts mixed with myth, bloody battles, and crises of faith. At times it is amusing, interesting, and shocking. It takes a portion of history and relates it to a person, showing some of the grittier realities of war. There is also a modern-day story with a group of professors involved with telling Hugh's tale, which I thought added to the story, with the professors arguing over the accuracy of historical or religious points, or the writing. I think lovers of history, especially those interested in knights or the crusades, will enjoy this, as well as anyone who enjoys a good adventure with battles. And there are maps included, which helped to visualize Hugh's travels. An exciting story and I am curious to know what happens to Hugh next.

Review: Dangerous Paradise by Debra Andrews

Dangerous Paradise by Debra Andrews

Description:
After death threats for her late father’s business crimes, a young woman escapes with her new fiancé on a South Pacific cruise and becomes stranded with another man—a cynical and devastatingly handsome English actor—in a fish-out-of water survival game. Unfortunately, the only ones who know they are alive are those out to kill her.

My Thoughts:
I loved this because it was fast-paced with lots of action and suspense. Full of  adventure, drama, steam, and fun. Their first meeting was hilarious. There were enough twists to keep me guessing and I had a hard time putting it down because I had no idea what was coming next. Review: The Goldenwealth Light by Scott McCloskey

The Goldenwealth Light (The Traveler of Ord, Book 1) by Scott McCloskey

Description:
Rather than being a hero with the fate of an entire world on his shoulders, Theodore Ellsworth spends his miserable days suffering merciless humiliation at the hands of prep-school bullies. It just so happens that an ancient prophecy, a shimmering city, and a herd of six-legged horses are about to change all that.

When a mysterious book transports Theo and his overachieving little sister Marie to a world full of wonders that defy anything he's ever read about before, Theo finds himself accused of a crime he didn't commit that carries the ultimate penalty. A reluctant princess, a winged gnome, and a hot-tempered young sorceress are there to help, but will they be enough to prove to an arrogant knight and thousands of fanatical citizens that the Ellsworth children aren't an evil that must be destroyed?

Told in the tradition of classics like The Chronicles of Narnia and The Neverending Story, The Goldenwealth Light is the first book in a fun-filled romp through the unique realm of the Traveler of Ord, weaving high adventure and deadly intrigue in a fanciful tapestry that will keep readers from ages ten to adult turning pages for hours.

My Thoughts:
This is a fantastic middle grade/YA fantasy/adventure story, but fun for adults, too. There are fantastic new creatures, magic, and a wonderful new world to explore. The pace is great and the characters are wonderfully drawn. I was engrossed in the book and I can't wait for the next. I recommend this for anyone who enjoys a good fantasy adventure.

Review: The Path of the Fallen by Dan O'Brien

The Path of the Fallen (Fallen Chronicles #1) by Dan O'Brien

Description:
The world is broken. The coming of the Intelligence pushed the remnants of humanity deep into the tundra. What remained was a vast sea of ice and the machine city, Culouth. E’Malkai Armen, descendent of the Fallen, has been a citizen of Culouth his entire life. A bitter betrayal, and the inception of a war that will destroy millions of lives, forces E’Malkai to confront the past and undertake a pilgrimage that is his by birthright. As he travels to the cold tundra of the north, the realm prepares for war. The Path of the Fallen is a lonely and arduous path, but it must be walked for the sake of all mankind.

My Thoughts:

E'Malkai is 17 years old when suddenly his world is turned upside down, war is threatening to destroy everyone, and they are all counting on him to save them. A fascinating story with an interesting combination of futuristic and more primitive technology. There is a fate-of-the-world quest and plenty of battles. The book is long with lots of backstory, history, people, and places to learn about. I really got into the story, though, and at the end I wanted to find out more.

Review: A Dubious Artifact by Gerald J. Kubicki

A Dubious Artifact (Colton Banyon mystery #6) by Gerald J. Kubicki

Description:
Colton Banyon is having a good day when he learns that the Chinese and the Effort are after an old artifact that was willed to him by his father. He later discovers that Loni is also tied to the artifact. Written on the old piece of solid gold are formulas that go back thousands of years, formulas that could put the world’s currency and financial stability in jeopardy. His old nemesis, Dr. Carol Thorne suddenly returns and wants the artifact at any cost, but Banyon is one step ahead of her and hatches a plan to protect it. His teams of sidekicks soon appear to help. Unfortunately the Chinese are not so easily put off. Within hours, Banyon’s life becomes at risk and several gun battles ensue. He and his team retreat to a FBI safe house but are discovered and both the Chinese and the Effort attack with an army of killers. Banyon must take down the Nazi leaders of the Effort and defeat the Chinese while protecting the artifact. He does have the help from Wolf, but the spirit tells him that some of his friends may die and he has to make the choices. In the final battle, the unthinkable happens, some of his friends die and he must carry on without them.

My Thoughts:
Banyon and company are in the business of taking out old Nazis and the Effort. In this, the sixth book of the series, they need to keep an artifact out of the hands of the bad guys. This book has lots of action, some mystery, ghosts and curses. The sex-crazed Patel sisters and jealous Loni provide comic relief. This is a fun action read. I have read A Dubious Plan, but it is not necessary to have read the other books to know what is going on.

Review: Stone of Tears by Terry Goodkind

Stone of Tears (Sword of Truth #2) by Terry Goodkind

Description:
An Epic of Awesome Power

Kahlan has at last gained the one goal she had always thought was beyond her grasp ... love. Against all odds, the ancient bonds of secret oaths, and the dark talents of men long dead, Richard has won her heart.

Amid sudden and disastrous events, Richard's life is called due to satisfy those treacherous oaths. To save his life, Kahlan must forsake Richard's love and cast him into the chains of slavery, knowing there could be no sin worse than such a betrayal.

Richard is determined to unlock the secrets bound in the magic of ancient oaths and to again be free. Kahlan, alone with the terrible truth of what she has done, must set about altering the course of a world thrown into war. But even that may be easier than ever winning back the heart of the only man she will ever love.

My Thoughts:
I am addicted to this series. This is the second book in the Sword of Truth series. There are so many interconnected stories and it is so unpredictable. I keep thinking, "Well, now what? How could he possibly get out of this?"
This one is a little more graphic than the first, gore-wise. Lots of violence, gore and references to rape. Some of the descriptions are lengthy and slow down the pace a bit, and this is a looong book. That said, I had to keep going because the plot is so complicated and twisty, and just an emotional roller-coaster. I have never read a hero who cries as much as Richard, but I guess he has plenty of cause. I can't wait to get started on the next book.
I have been listening to the audio versions of this series and this one was over 38 hours long, easily the longest I have ever listened to, but the narration is fantastic and easy to listen to. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes fantasy worlds and magic and can stomach all of the blood and gore.

Review: Dare the Devil by Elaine Raco Chase

Dare the Devil by Elaine Raco Chase

Description:
Welcome to Glacier Country! Luthor Devlin and his ranch hands were out tracking 20th-century rustlers when they stepped into a time warp! There on the jagged cliffs was a woolly mammoth, a sabre-toothed tiger, and a tawny, near-naked savage. She was a primal fantasy come true - that left him stunned!
His gaze locked onto hers. "I'd really appreciate an explanation of all this. You, the hairy elephant, and the cat with the overbite are not the norm in Montana. And I know you can understand my every word. So anytime you'd like to begin."
Her relaxed appraisal hadn't gone unnoticed by either the man or the large tiger. The latter proved her undoing. His mouth opened not to snarl again but to emit a long, loud, kittenish yawn. The tiger rolled over, rubbed his back and shoulders into the ground, his hind legs spread-eagle, yawned again, and pawed sleepily at his face. To the amazement of everyone, his sword-like teeth fell out.
"Damn it, Pumpkin, why couldn't you have just growled!" She extended her hand. "Cam Stirling, action technician." At his confused expression, she sighed. "Stunt woman."
She was wild, irresistible - and he was the man to tame her. She dared the devil every day - why not Luthor Devlin!

My Thoughts:
I thought it was a cute story. Cam is a stunt woman and Thor is attracted to her right away, but he has a problem with how dangerous her job is. He really struggles with that, wanting to protect her. Cam is a strong woman who can take care of herself and makes no apologies about it. If he has a problem with it, then it is his problem. She is very patient with him, though, while he tries to get a grip. The story has lots of humor and plenty of steam.

The audio has two narrators, which is nice to differentiate between the male and female characters and points of view. The male narrator in particular is very good at voicing different characters. Both had moments where they sounded a bit stilted, but overall it was very well done. There is music between chapters which is nice, but personally I don't find it necessary. Music and sound effects during the story tend to distract me a bit, but that is a personal preference, and it was only one scene. Overall a very enjoyable listen.

Review: A Dubious Plan by Gerald J. Kubicki

A Dubious Plan (Colton Banyon Mystery #5) by Gerald J. Kubicki

Description:
In the fifth Colton Banyon mystery, Banyon and his sidekick, Loni are called to Death Valley just as they are about to attend a wedding in Las Vegas. The wedding is very significant as one of the Patel sisters is marrying Eric, Wolf’s long lost grandson. Loni is determined to make it happen as it will end the curse that sexually attracts the Patel sisters to her man.
However, an old German war plane has been found in the sand dunes of Death Valley and contains many mysteries. They drive out to inspect the discovery as Banyon believes that the find is very important. As they attempt to unravel the mysteries, they discover a plan that goes back to the end of World War II and could affect modern day America.
Soon they find someone who was on the plane and possesses a map to a hidden cave. But an old Nazi knows about the cave and a war develops in the barren desert. Banyon calls in his team and finds out that they are on their own as the old Nazi attacks. The Nazi is after something, but what? Banyon and his entire team face immense peril. And then bad things start to happen.

My Thoughts:
I'm not really a history person, so when I saw this was about Nazis, I wasn't sure if I would be that interested. I ended up really enjoying it. This book is fast-paced with an intriguing mystery, action, suspense, shooting, explosions, a spirit who talks to people, curses, and a great cast of characters. I especially like Loni, with her guns and attitude. I love this quote about her by Banyon, after she takes out one of the bad guy's bodyguards: "She is my bodyguard. I only need one. Now take this crybaby and get out now."

Loni and Banyon are detectives who, I believe, hunt down old Nazis and/or Nazi artifacts. This is the fifth book and I haven't ready any of the others, but I think that's right. I currently have the sixth book, A Dubious Artifact, waiting for me and I am anxious to read it. There are also several more waiting to be published, so if you don't like to wait long between books this is a good series to start.

*Notes: Plenty of sexual references, but they are left to the imagination.
