Book Review: The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

Description:

Aiden Bishop knows the rules. Evelyn Hardcastle will die every day until he can identify her killer and break the cycle. But every time the day begins again, Aiden wakes up in the body of a different guest at Blackheath Manor. And some of his hosts are more helpful than others. With a locked-room mystery that Agatha Christie would envy, Stuart Turton unfurls a breakneck novel of intrigue and suspense.

My Thoughts:
This is the strangest murder mystery I've ever read. I was intrigued from the very beginning, with our narrator waking up with no memory. As the story continued and became stranger and stranger, I could not read fast enough to try to figure out what was going on, to get all of the puzzle pieces to fit together. Had my full attention up to the very end. Definitely recommend this one.

Book Review: The Vibrant Years by Sonali Dev

Description:

Living on their own terms means being there for one another.

When sixty-five-year-old Bindu Desai inherits a million dollars, she’s astounded―and horrified. The windfall threatens to expose a shameful mistake from her youth. On an impulse, Bindu quickly spends it on something unexpected: a condo in a posh retirement community in Florida.

The impulsive decision blindsides Bindu’s daughter-in-law, Aly. At forty-seven, Aly still shares a home with Bindu even after her divorce from Bindu’s son. But maybe this change is just the push Aly needs to fight for her own dreams.

As Bindu and Aly navigate their new dynamic, Aly’s daughter, Cullie, is faced with losing the business that made her a tech-world star. The only way to save it is to deliver a new idea to her investors―and they want the dating app she pitched them in a panic. Problem is, Cullie has never been on a real date. Naturally, enlisting her single mother and grandmother to help her with the research is the answer.

From USA Today bestselling author Sonali Dev comes a heartfelt novel about three generations of hilarious, unconventional, ambitious women who embark on a shared journey of self-discovery. Join the Desai women as they come together to embrace the hijinks and heartbreak of facing their greatest fears to finally live their most vibrant lives.

My Thoughts:

A lovely book about three women from three generations. All are at different points in their lives, yet they have so much in common. All three women are figuring out their lives, dating, and finding love. There is plenty of humor. I enjoyed this story very much, as I do all of Sonali Dev's books.

Shattered by D.A. Charles - Book Review

Description:

Shattered.

Eighteenth birthdays only occur once in one’s lifetime and they are supposed to be life changing-fate had a grim sense of humor when she attended Steven’s Maxwell’s party.

Irrevocably shattered when a devastating accident changes every aspect of his family dynamic, Steven Maxwell must salvage what’s left of his life; fitting the pieces into a puzzle that not only leads him through recovery, but to self discovery.

-0-

Abigail Harris has her life all planned out in perfect compartments. Her job. Her family. Her social life. Abby doesn’t have room in her life for the unexpected. She doesn’t have room in her tiny apartment either-especially when not one, but both of her long-divorced parents end up on her threshold within hours of each other.

Enter Abby’s Christmas Eve nightmare, turned medical mystery-the young educator is shattered when her health takes an unexpected detour.

Cue providence stepping in and sending an ambassador with a disability who welcomes Abby into his world and shows her-a life with physical limitations is still a life with quality.

Shattered is not broken.

-The Roll Models Saga-

Close your eyes and imagine a journey where even the smallest things in life cannot be taken for granted. Connect with characters so deep that when you open your eyes, all the layers that have been pulled back reveal an emotional response you never expected.

My Thoughts:

An emotional, realistic look into life with disabilities. The first 76% of the book is about Stephen and his struggles with living with a sudden disability as he adjusts to the changes and deals with his personal care, mobility issues, and personal relationships.
Finally we meet Abby and see how she deals with her disability. Her story felt a bit rushed after getting Stephen’s in so much detail. I wish we could have seen more of the two of them together. And the ending was pretty abrupt. I’m not a fan of big cliffhangers.
This is a really good read. I recommend for anyone interested in what it is like to live with a disability.

My Daring Duchess by Julie Johnstone Release Day Blitz: Excerpt, Giveaway, and Review

Comment on this post to win your choice of any ebook of the first three Once Upon a Rogue books by Julie Johnstone! Just answer the question: Have you ever hatched a plan of revenge?

Description:
When a lady bent on ruining rogues and a duke set on revenge attempt to derail each other’s plans, passion erupts into a love for the ages.

After being left brokenhearted by a duplicitous rake, Anne Adair no longer desires a husband—she wants justice. She’s traded in her foolish dream of happily-ever-after for the much more sensible one of thwarting the blackhearted lords who prey on innocent debutantes. But her first mission proves rather complicated when the dashing, devilish Duke of Kilmartin comes to the aid of her target.

Simon Sedgewick, the newly titled Duke of Kilmartin, never thought he would return to England, let alone attend a ball full of simpering lords. But when his oldest friend’s reputation is being smeared and Simon discovers that the perpetrator is none other than his enemy’s granddaughter, his long-festering desire for vengeance flares to life.

The moment Simon spies Miss Anne Adair across the glittering ballroom, he knows that the ravishing beauty is the perfect instrument for the retribution he thought lost to him. He does not know, however, that Anne has devised a scheme of her own. And soon, these two wary hearts will discover that the best laid plans are no match for love.

Excerpt:
Frustrated with her continued inability to control her reactions to him, Anne blurted, “Why are you intent on seducing me, Simon? Do you need my fortune? Or do you simply want to add it to your own?”

Simon’s eyes widened, and he appeared honestly shocked. His arm stiffened against her back, yet he did not move it. “I neither need nor want yer fortune,” he said. “Is it truly so hard for ye to believe a man would want to seduce ye simply for ye and ye alone? Yer wit and yer beauty make for a very enticing combination.”

It was as if Simon had delved into her secret thoughts and discovered the one thing she had long hoped for but had abandoned. A spark of her old, foolish dream lit within her, even though she knew Simon was speaking only of seduction and not of love. Still, after years of feeling less than desirable, to have this man, the Adonis, tell her he desired her for simply her… Well, it made her heart skip several beats. She was not made of stone, after all.

My Thoughts:
I loved this one. Anne was deceived by a rogue and wants to help other young ladies from making the same mistake. Simon was falsely accused of doing the same thing, but sets out to seduce Anne for revenge. As they get to know one another, plans change. I loved both characters, and the story. It wrapped up pretty quickly in the end, but left me satisfied.

An Unexpected Afterlife by Dan Sofer

Description:
YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE.

Moshe Karlin wakes up one morning, naked and alone, in the Mount of Olives Cemetery. According to his family and friends, he died two years ago, but Moshe is not about to accept his demise lying down.

Is his new lease on life a freak of nature or the start of the long-awaited Resurrection? Moshe doesn't really care. He vows to beat his "afterlife crisis" and win back his life-and his wife-if it is the last thing he does.

But the road ahead is full of unexpected dangers. Along the way he gains insight into life, love, and the Jewish State, as well as the suspicion that perhaps his perfect first life was not so perfect after all.

Meanwhile, other changes are afoot in the Holy Land. A reluctant prophet prepares to deliver a message of redemption-and the end of life as we know it-when a freak accident changes the course of history.

Readers who enjoy the satire and humor of Kurt Vonnegut, Carl Hiaasen, Terry Pratchett, and Douglas Adams will enjoy this intriguing and humorous mystery in the Jewish lore and legends of the Resurrection, the World to Come, and the Messianic Era.

My Thoughts:

Wow. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book but the description sounded interesting so I thought I’d give it a try. I loved it. Once I started reading I couldn’t stop. A man wakes up in a cemetery and finds out that he died two years ago. Why is he back? What’s he going to do now? This book explores the Jewish religion, but at its core it’s a story about people. That’s what kept me reading. The pace was good and kept moving right alone, and the twists kept coming. I was satisfied with the ending but I can’t wait to read the next book. I want to find out more.

Review: Someday I'll Be Redeemed by Kelly Blanchard

Description:
Everyone thinks him to be dead--or guilty. Without a word or sighting of Prince Lorrek of Cuskelom these last ten years, all believe the rumors of his crimes, which he is said to have committed, are true. However, when he finally returns to clear his name, Lorrek realizes the only way to find redemption is to become the very man they think him to be in this time when advanced technology challenges ancient magic to war.

My Thoughts:
I loved this one from beginning to end. Something a little different. Fantasy combined with sci-fi, complete with kings, queens, princes, princesses, magic, technology, and politics among wildly different kingdoms. Fantastic world-building, excellent story-telling, and intriguing characters. I really loved Lorrek and the story kept me hooked. I can't wait to read the next installment.

Romantic Comedy Review: After the Final Dandelion by Brooke Williams

Description:
After Renee Lockhart appeared on the local TV dating show "Accept this Dandelion" and found the love of her life, she thought she was done with TV. But when she hears that the entire city has bets on how soon she and her fiancé will break up, she is determined to show that their love is meant to last. When Mike, the KETO producer, approaches her about airing the wedding live, she jumps at the chance. Once she is set up with a famous wedding coordinator, plans take a turn for the worse and the simple wedding they wanted becomes the event of the year. In the meantime, Eva Merida is dealing with her own life changing opportunity. Though she’s in love with her boyfriend, who she met on the second season of the dating show, she can’t turn down the chance to investigate a Hollywood TV show when offered a position. When she runs into an old flame, she questions the stability of her current relationship. Will Renee be able to prove her love for Ben to the city before her wedding falls apart? Who will Eva choose on her own emotional roller coaster? Hilarity ensues as the wedding of the decade melts into the disaster of the year. Because everyone knows weeds take over every garden…

My Thoughts:
This was a quick, fun read. Renee and Eva both found their loves on the set of "Accept This Dandelion." The book goes back and forth between the two ladies as Renee is planning her wedding to Ben to air on TV. There are plenty of funny moments and some near-disasters. I think I would have liked this even more if I had read the first two books and had more background on the characters, but it was still enjoyable.

Review: Mug Shot by Caroline Fardig

Description:
Former musician Juliet Langley has barely had a day off since taking over management of the coffeehouse owned by her best friend, Pete Bennett. But there's always more to be done—such as prepping for the annual Holiday 5K Race organized by Pete's snobby socialite girlfriend, Cecilia Hollingsworth. This year, Java Jive has a booth right at the finish line, and since Juliet and Cecilia don't always see eye to eye, everything has to be perfect. Nothing can go wrong. Nothing . . . like Juliet stumbling over Cecilia's dead body on the morning of the race.

When Pete is arrested for Cecilia's murder, Juliet sets out to clear his name. She'll do whatever it takes—even if it means standing up to the police, her ex-boyfriend, and the grande dames of Nashville. But there isn't enough espresso in the world for the greatest challenge in her path: infiltrating Nashville's high society to uncover the hidden hotbed of scandal without running afoul of the law herself. With her last dime staked on Pete's bail bond and her staff growing jittery, the last thing Juliet needs is for her trademark temper to land her behind bars. As time drips away, Juliet needs to crack this case before the killer comes back for another shot.

My Thoughts:
I loved this! I fell in love with Juliet while reading Death Before Decaf and I couldn't wait to get my hands on this Java Jive mystery. Juliet is working on her sleuthing skills again, this time because her best friend is behind bars and she has to clear his name. With great characters, humor, and a plot that kept me guessing to the very end, I loved this one every bit as much as the first. I couldn't stop reading.

Review: Meddling With Murder by Ellie Campbell

Description:
Crouch End Confidential, the agency started by housewife, Cathy O’Farrell, with ex-cleaner Pimple, is failing badly. Hardly surprising when their only clients are little old ladies seeking lost pets. Until the strange case of the missing dog…

Soon Cathy’s multiple problems include stolen bikes, a possible murder weapon, the sabotage of her friends’ new shop, drug-dealing yobbos targeting her children’s primary school and being forced to pose as the world’s most inept maths tutor. Worse, best friend Rosa hires her to investigate fiancé Alec and – horrors – Cathy’s husband Declan is intent on moving himself, Cathy and kids to the safer climes of rural Norfolk. Suddenly Cathy is endangering her marriage, friendships and her life to untangle these messes. But that’s what you get for meddling with murder…

My Thoughts:

This is a light, fun mystery. Cathy is a wife and mother trying to run a business but she keeps giving away her services for free, so the business isn't doing very well. She tries to find lost pets and stolen bicycles and gets caught up in her friends' problems. She's a busy mom that I can relate to, though a little clueless at times.  I loved this, just as I have the other books in the series.

Review: Morning Star by Pierce Brown

Description:
Darrow would have lived in peace, but his enemies brought him war. The Gold overlords demanded his obedience, hanged his wife, and enslaved his people. But Darrow is determined to fight back. Risking everything to transform himself and breach Gold society, Darrow has battled to survive the cutthroat rivalries that breed Society's mightiest warriors, climbed the ranks, and waited patiently to unleash the revolution that will tear the hierarchy apart from within.

Finally, the time has come.

But devotion to honor and hunger for vengeance run deep on both sides. Darrow and his comrades-in-arms face powerful enemies without scruple or mercy. Among them are some Darrow once considered friends. To win, Darrow will need to inspire those shackled in darkness to break their chains, unmake the world their cruel masters have built, and claim a destiny too long denied - and too glorious to surrender.

My Thoughts:
This is the final book in the Red Rising Trilogy. Wow. Darrow has come a long way from Red Rising. He has quite a job to do. He is attempting to bring down a broken society and replace it with something else. Ultimately the book, and the series, is about people and relationships, loyalty, betrayal, and love. It is fast-paced and action packed with great, complex characters. Just don't get too attached to anyone because the body count is high. There are so many twists in this one that my head is still spinning. This series is one of my top favorites.

Review: Fear Dreams by J.A. Schneider

Description:

Liddy Barron, an artist, was injured in a hit-and-run accident that left her with recurring nightmares, gaps in her memory, and an increasing obsession in the disappearance of a coed named Sasha Perry. Insecure and nervous, Liddy's turmoil grows as she begins seeing ghostly images. Her husband Paul tries to help but suspects it's just her imagination...while intuitive Detective Kerri Blasco, also obsessed with young Sasha's disappearance, senses that Liddy may have a key to solving the case, and tries to unravel the shocking truth of what really haunts her.

My Thoughts:

Liddy is recovering from an accident. she is having nightmares and seeing things. She's not sure if she's crazy or why she is seeing what she is seeing. Kerri is a detective who is trying to find a missing woman whose case is being closed. Their stories connect. There is a great build up. Lots of twists in this story. Kept me guessing. Excellent read. Recommend for psychological thriller lovers.

Review: Deadly Dunes by E. Michael Helms

Description:
Hours after hiring Mac McClellan to investigate the supposed suicide of her archaeologist brother, single-mom Jessie dies in a car accident. Jessie had just showed Mac artifacts and a copy of a map Jake found, items that indicate Hernando de Soto and his explorers might have camped on Five Mile Island during the winter of 1539-1540. Studying the map, Mac determines the site lies in the middle of a planned resort, The Dunes. Declaring the area an historic site could shut the project down. Suspicions aroused, he forges ahead, even though he no longer has a paying client.

Everywhere Mac turns, greed abounds, and no one he interviews seems innocent, even Jessie's closest friends the Deckers, who have adopted her teenage daughter. Ron Decker's construction company is building the Dunes, and he is heavily invested in its success. Then there is the oily son and ex-stripper wife of an old curmudgeon who won't sell the one lot the project still needs to acquire. Jake's estranged wife Laurel had plenty to gain from his death, and as Mac continues to dig, he begins to wonder if Jessie herself had more at stake than he was led to believe.

No one is happy about Mac's persistence, and someone is unhappy enough to crash his truck and frame him for yet another murder. But Mac isn't giving up, no matter what the cost.

Book 3 in the Mac McClellan Mystery series.

My Thoughts:
Mac is hired to investigate a case that ends up leading him into a complicated and dangerous mess. This is the third book in the series but they each stand alone. Mac is a retired Marine turned P.I.  Kate is his sassy girlfriend. We don't see a whole lot of her in this book, but I like her. This one has an interesting case that keeps you guessing. An enjoyable mystery.

Review: The Viscount's Christmas Temptation by Erica Ridley

Description:
Certain individuals might consider Lady Amelia Pembroke a managing sort of female, but truly, most people would be lost without her help. Why, the latest on-dit is that rakish Viscount Sheffield is canceling the fête of the year because he hasn't time for silly soirees. He doesn't need time—he needs her!

When a flash of lightning destroys the venue for his family's annual Christmas ball, Lord Benedict Sheffield intends to enjoy a relaxing holiday for once. But after twelve days of beguiling Lady Amelia's guerrilla tactics, he's up to his cravat with tinsel . . . and tumbling head over heels in love.

My Thoughts:
This was a sweet, fun read. The first two chapters really show their personalities. They are opposites, but you can tell they will complement one another. I enjoyed the humor.  Suddenly they are in love. I felt a bit like I missed something. It was rather rushed. It was a great quick read, though.  I like it.

Review: Ashley Bell by Dean Koontz

Description:
THE MUST-READ THRILLER OF THE YEAR: Featuring the most exhilarating heroine in memory and a sophisticated, endlessly ingenious, brilliantly paced narrative through dark territory and deep mystery, this is a new milestone in literary suspense and a major new breakout book from the long acclaimed master.

At twenty-two, Bibi Blair’s doctors tell her that she’s dying. Two days later, she’s impossibly cured. Fierce, funny, dauntless, she becomes obsessed with the idea that she was spared because she is meant to save someone else. Someone named Ashley Bell. This proves to be a dangerous idea. Searching for Ashley Bell, ricocheting through a southern California landscape that proves strange and malevolent in the extreme, Bibi is plunged into a world of crime and conspiracy, following a trail of mysteries that become more sinister and tangled with every twisting turn.

Unprecedented in scope, infinite in heart, Ashley Bell is a magnificent achievement that will capture lovers of dark psychological suspense, literary thrillers, and modern classics of mystery and adventure. Beautifully written, at once lyrical and as fast as a bullet, here is the most irresistible novel of the decade.

My Thoughts:
I don't want to say much about the plot for fear of giving something away. Basically Bibi is diagnosed with brain cancer that gives her only weeks to live, then she is miraculously cured. When she leaves the hospital she ends up needing to track down someone named Ashley Bell. The story keeps jumping back to events that happened when Bibi was younger as well as the point of view of Pax, Bibi's boyfriend. it was bit slow at times but the mystery kept me intrigued. The story kept spinning off into directions that I didn't see coming. Kept me guessing. The ending was a little out there and leaves things open for another book. A crazy ride and I enjoyed it.

Review: Unlucky 13 by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro

Description:
The Women's Murder Club is stalked by a killer with nothing to lose.
San Francisco Detective Lindsay Boxer is loving her life as a new mother. With an attentive husband, a job she loves, plus best friends who can talk about anything from sex to murder, things couldn't be better.
Then the FBI sends Lindsay a photo of a killer from her past, and her happy world is shattered. The picture captures a beautiful woman at a stoplight. But all Lindsay sees is the psychopath behind those seductive eyes: Mackie Morales, the most deranged and dangerous mind the Women's Murder Club has ever encountered.
In this pulse-racing, emotionally charged novel by James Patterson, the Women's Murder Club must find a killer--before she finds them first.

My Thoughts:

This is the first book I've read in this series but I would definitely read more. I enjoyed the characters of Detective Lindsay Boxer and her friends in the Women's Murder Club. The book kept moving from one event to the next. The pace was great and there was plenty going on. The surprises kept popping up to keep me guessing. This was a great mystery/ suspense read.

Review: Whispered Pain by Ashley Fontainne

Description:
I am no longer among the living. At least, I don’t think I am. I don’t remember my name, my age, or even my sex. I don’t feel. I can’t smell. I hear, but sounds don’t register emotional responses anymore. I see, but it’s all in muted gray. No vibrant colors.

No sense of time, space, awareness. I just…float. Like a weightless cloud drifting through the limitless universe. I don’t know where I am or how I arrived at this point. Ebony nothingness has swallowed me whole.

Can you help me? Will you help me? I need to know. Want to know. Have to know.

Who am I?

Where am I?

How do I escape this black void?

Help.

Please, help me.

My Thoughts:
This one gets off to a slow start. The first several chapters are different characters and it is difficult to follow. Once this story gets going, though, it is hard to put down. Everything also gets tied up at the end. It is a pretty intense and twisted story.
My first thought when I started listening to this one is that he narrator sounds like a Disney princess. That ends up working for the story, though. It provides a contrast to some of the horrific events in the book. This narrator also does a particularly excellent job of bringing the dialogue to life. I enjoyed listening.

Review: A Charming Cure by Tonya Kappes

Description:
Bubble...Bubble...

Psychic June Heal's homeopathic cure shop, A Charming Cure, is the most popular shop in the unusual little town of Whispering Falls, Kentucky.

Cures and trouble...

June is about to learn she has more than psychic abilities when she attends Hidden Hall, A Spiritualist University, leaving her shop in the hands of handsome sheriff Oscar Park.
Hidden Hall has an internal war between the Good-Siders and the Dark-Siders, putting June in the middle.

Magic stirs...

Hidden Hall is riddled with every type of spiritualist. Magic is lurking around every corner, even black-magic.
Unfortunately, the Ultimate Spell gets into the wrong hands. But it is only discovered after a few spiritualists go missing or end up poisoned to death.

And troubles double...

Madam Torres, June's crystal ball, reveals that A Charming Cure is in shambles along with the rest of Whispering Falls.
Will June figure out who has the Ultimate Spell and stop them before they destroy the entire spiritualist community?

My Thoughts:
This is a cute series. I love the magic and how June is learning more about it, including how to use her powers. June is fun, although she has an unhealthy obsession with ding dongs. Does she ever eat anything else? The mystery in this one was a little more predictable than the first. The story a bit more jumbled than the first. Rushed maybe. The June/Oscar thing was a little hard for me to believe because they're hardly together in this book. You definitely need to have read the first book for it to make sense. I do want to read the next book. These are very enjoyable and I look forward to seeing where the story goes from here.

A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn

Description:
London, 1887. As the city prepares to celebrate Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, Veronica Speedwell is marking a milestone of her own. After burying her spinster aunt, the orphaned Veronica is free to resume her world travels in pursuit of scientific inquiry—and the occasional romantic dalliance. As familiar with hunting butterflies as she is fending off admirers, Veronica wields her butterfly net and a sharpened hatpin with equal aplomb, and with her last connection to England now gone, she intends to embark upon the journey of a lifetime.

But fate has other plans, as Veronica discovers when she thwarts her own abduction with the help of an enigmatic German baron with ties to her mysterious past. Promising to reveal in time what he knows of the plot against her, the baron offers her temporary sanctuary in the care of his friend Stoker—a reclusive natural historian as intriguing as he is bad-tempered. But before the baron can deliver on his tantalizing vow to reveal the secrets he has concealed for decades, he is found murdered. Suddenly Veronica and Stoker are forced to go on the run from an elusive assailant, wary partners in search of the villainous truth.

My Thoughts:
This was a very intriguing mystery. Veronica is not your average heroine She is very independent, witty, intelligent, and not afraid to speak her mind. I was pulled into this right away. The first person was interesting because Veronica has a very unique voice.  We don't really know what's going on but it kept me interested until the very end. I raced through the book and want more of Veronica and Stoker.

Review: Peril by Ponytail by Nancy J. Cohen

Description:
Marla and Dalton’s honeymoon at an Arizona dude ranch veers from dangerous to downright deadly faster than a horse headed to the corral. With her husband’s uncle—the resort’s owner—on the suspect list for murder, Marla races to prove his innocence. She hopes her blind trust isn’t misplaced, especially when she learns their relative has secrets he’d rather keep buried. As the bodies pile up, she digs deeper to find the killer. With her new family in jeopardy, she’d better figure out who’s adding to the spirits at a nearby ghost town before someone she loves is hurt. Saddle up for Marla’s latest adventure in the Wild West where a Bad Hair Day is the least of her worries.

My Thoughts:
A mystery that kept me guessing with fun characters. Marla and Dalton are supposed to be on their honeymoon but they were invited with an ulterior motive in mind. Bad things have been happening and their relatives are hoping they can help. Marla's inquisitive nature gets her deeper into the mystery and closer to the truth, though all she wants to do is relax with her husband. She also has her shears with her, just in case. She might be on vacation but it is hard to leave work behind completely. I just really like Marla and found this to be an enjoyable mystery.

A classic Regency romance from beloved author Jane Ashford!

Brash and Handsome
Sir Justin Keighley is all wrong for a proper young lady like Margaret Mayfield. Everyone knows he is shocking in his opinions, arrogant in his manner, and completely without respect for the common decencies of civilized society. Margaret absolutely will not marry him—no matter what her parents say.

Beautiful and Shy
Margaret was everything Sir Justin detested in a woman—timid, sheltered, and obedient to a fault. It’s not until she runs away from him that he finds he must give chase. Margaret is discovering she can be bold and rebellious—intrepid enough to do what she must, and more exciting than Justin ever imagined possible. She’s the last woman he would have expected to lead them both into uncharted territory…

An Excerpt:

Sir Justin Keighley stood in the doorway, looking them over with a slight, satirical curve of his lips. He wore, like the other gentlemen, conventional evening dress, but this superficial similarity was their only common ground. Ralph Mayfìeld, Philip Manningham, the squire, and John Twitchel were none of them unattractive men or negligible personalities. Each, in his own sphere, had a certain dignity and authority, and all had the confidence that respect engendered. Yet somehow, the moment he entered the room and before he spoke a word, Justin Keighley eclipsed them. It was not charm. Indeed, the newcomer did not look at all pleasant or ingratiating. And it was not mere social position. Keighley held an ancient baronetcy and a substantial fortune, but any of twenty men his hosts were accustomed to meeting ranked above him. Ralph Mayfield could not have said why he felt subdued as he came forward to greet his final guest.
The squire’s wife might have enlightened him. As she had told a friend at a Bath assembly two years ago, “Justin Keighley is a vastly attractive man, my dear. And not just to women. All the young men ape him, my son among them. I don’t know just how it is, but he has a great influence without appearing to seek it in the least. Indeed, sometimes I think he dislikes the idea. But it goes on. It’s something in his manner. No doubt you’ve noticed it yourself. He makes you look at him.” Mrs. Camden had been embarrassed by this speech, but it was quite true. And Keighley’s attraction was the more mysterious because he was not conventionally handsome. Though tall and well made, with broad shoulders and a good leg, his features were rough—a jutting nose and heavy black brows that nearly obscured expressive hazel eyes. And he took no care with his dress, a rarity in an elegant age. His coats were made so that he could shrug himself into them without help; his collars did not even approach his jaw; and he had once been observed in White’s with a distinct thumb mark on his Hessian boots, giving one of the dandy set what he described as “a shuddering palpitation.”
But these sartorial eccentricities were outweighed by Sir Justin’s political influence and sagacity. He was an intimate of the Prince Regent and Lord Holland, and important in the Whig Party. These facts did not explain his fascination for a great number of people, chiefly women, who hadn’t the slightest interest in politics, but they amply justified the Mayfìelds’ attention and suppressed antipathy.
“Good evening,” Keighley said to Mr. Mayfield in a deep, resonant voice. “I hope I haven’t kept you waiting.”
“Not at all, not at all. Come in. You know everyone, I think.”
Sir Justin bowed his head with a sardonic smile. He always met precisely the same people at his yearly dinner with the Mayfields, presumably those they were certain he could not “corrupt” with his aberrant opinions, and he always felt the same infuriated boredom. For the fiftieth time he wondered why he came. There was no hope of amusement or chance of advantage here. The Mayfields and their friends were just the sort of smug, resolutely conventional people he despised. They held to the views their fathers had bequeathed them and attacked all others. If one tried to make them change even a fraction, they shook their heads and muttered of treason.
He looked around the room. The only addition this year was the Mayfìelds’ daughter. He had forgotten her name, but he remembered that she had come out last season. She looked as one would have expected: a pallid, simpering creature. Keighley shrugged. Politics forced him to endure fools occasionally. The Prince would want to know the climate of opinion here in Devon. He supposed he could get through this evening as he had previous ones, through a combination of stoicism and bitter inner laughter.
Margaret watched him with awed apprehension as he settled beside Mrs. Camden and began to chat with her about London. She had never actually spoken to Sir Justin; her mother had seen to that. But she had heard him talked of so many times that she felt she knew what he would say in response to a wide variety of remarks. It would always be shocking. She gazed at him in an effort to understand how any man could be so utterly depraved in thought and action, almost expecting his rugged face to contort in a grimace of malevolence and his chiseled lips to emit some horrifying revelation.
Suddenly Sir Justin looked up and met her eyes from across the room. He seemed at first startled to find her staring, then his mocking smile appeared again, and he raised one black brow, holding her gaze. Embarrassed, Margaret tried to look away, but something in his hazel eyes prevented it. A spark glinted there, and she felt a kind of tremor along her nerves. It was utterly unfamiliar and unsettling, like a violent thrill of feeling. How could a stranger affect her so? This must be fear, she thought; I am afraid of him. She began to tremble, but still she could not turn her head away. He seemed to understand her reaction and, amused, to prolong the contact on purpose.
Finally Keighley laughed and bent to answer some question of Mrs. Camden’s. Margaret jerked back in her chair and clasped her shaking hands so tightly that the knuckles whitened. He was a dreadful man. She would not speak to him, and if she ever saw him again, she would run away.

My Thoughts:
I found Sir Justin and Margaret both to be thoroughly unlikable characters in the beginning. Margaret is so timid and has no personality to speak of and Sir Justin is just not very nice. It was nice to see, when they were taken out of their element, how their personalities changed. I enjoyed some of the secondary characters they met, Jemmy and Mrs. Dowling in particular. If you are looking for a sweet, clean historical romance, you might enjoy this one.
