Book Review: Blast by Robert Blake Whitehill

Description:

The Chesapeake Bay rarely freezes, but when it does, the ice halts global shipping companies and Smith Island fisherfolk alike from making a living. With their deadrise workboats locked in ice at their piers, the people of Smith Island take to the frozen wastes on foot, on skates, and even on golfcarts, to experience this freak weather phenomenon. Blackshaw is not immune to the lure of the ice, but on his sightseeing trek, he discovers the frozen corpse of a woman. Blackshaw and his neighbors bring the dead body to an abandoned restaurant on Smith Island, and place the remains on an old picnic table inside. Only then do they realize the woman was shot at close range, then tossed into the Chesapeake days before the bay froze.
A neighbor boy dashes into the makeshift mortuary with shocking images captured by his drone’s camera. There are eight more corpses still out there frozen in the ice. Blackshaw and his neighbors bring the other bodies inside. Several of them wear life preservers labeled Penelope, which is the name of a massive Liquid Natural Gas transport frozen in the Chesapeake’s main shipping channel. Every corpse shows signs of foul play.
As night falls, Blackshaw and Knocker Ellis decide to patrol through the worsening blizzard to the ship to investigate. Before they leave, LuAnna finds a microscope slide stashed in the first corpse’s clothing. The slide contains a blue fluid, which they quickly identify as a sample of horseshoe crab blood. They soon tie the murders of the Penelope’screw to a plan set in motion by Big Pharma which wants to destroy the entire Chesapeake Bay fishery.
Blackshaw’s frenemies from the FBI, Agents Molly Wilde and Pershing Lowry, soon join the mission, which involves keen detective work, as well as a several bloody skirmishes aboard an LNG tanker wired to explode. Blackshaw, LuAnna, Ellis, and friends must defuse the plot before Washington, D.C. is devastated, and life in the Chesapeake Bay is poisoned for decades to come.

My Thoughts:

It's always a good day when a new Ben Blackshaw book comes out. This sixth installment has all of the action and thrills we have come to expect. When bodies start showing up in the ice, Blackshaw and the other Smith Islanders need to figure out what is happening. There are plenty of bad guys, explosions, and suspense along the way. I love the humor that is sprinkled in, just a touch to lighten things up, and the fact that the women in this series are just as tough as the men. As always, I finished this book already looking forward to the next.

Release Day Review: Flicker by Debra Anastasia

FLICKER is a LIVE WIRE!

Debra Anastasia's newest Rom Com is sweet, spicy and bound to make you smile! Poor Monday Blue blows out the power to her apartment building with a personal massager. The electrician that shows up at her door is hot enough to melt her outlets.

Of course, they can never date because residents in the building and employees of Hanning Electric are not allowed to cross wires.

Instead, Monday paints a portrait of Bear in his birthday suit on her wall. Full size. And you know what I mean. *winks with both eyes*

When Bear has to come for a return visit he blows his fuse. Can the flickers of passion ignite their love?

Monday Blue

Strings of fairy lights make horrible extension cords for personal pleasure devices. I found out the hard way when I started a fire with my excessive use of a high-powered massager. But to be fair, electricity has always been out to get me. Okay, maybe we’re more like frenemies. My flatiron depends on it, but I also fear the zap it sends through me on an unwelcome, regular basis.

How do I explain this to the tattooed, hot electrician that shows up at my front door?

BEAR

She was festive, I’ll give her that. The jerry-rigged self-satisfaction station Monday Blue had in her bedroom was unique. Hell, it was flashing to a beat. Ever since I checked her fuse box, I wanted to fix a whole lot more than her current. Blinky lights have never been so tempting before.

There’s a strict no fraternizing policy between the apartment residents and our family-run electric company. I have no way to rationalize the humongous, naked mural she’s painted of me on her wall. I need to face the girl of my dreams and demand she see things my way.

Can Bear and Monday turn each other on long enough to let a flicker become a spark?

My Thoughts:
This was a fun read. Bear and Monday meet when he comes to fix the electricity in her building. They immediately hit it off but they're not allowed to date because of the contract between the company he works for and the building. There are some very funny, laugh-out-loud moments. Some parts are a little more serious. They both have some issues with their families to work out. There is a good balance and I enjoyed this very much.

So Wicked by Melissa Marino - Review, Excerpt, and Giveaway

Fate has a wicked sense of humor.

Alexis's new life was made up of two things: baking and hiding the details of her old life in Chicago. The first allowed her to finally find some happiness. And the second is about to be destroyed by a man who knows all her secrets.

Marshall Rawlins was prepared to do anything when he moved cross-country to launch an upscale cocktail bar---anything except work with Alexis, his best friend and business partner's ex-wife. Adding Alexis's boozy-baked goods to his menu would be a major feat for his bar. But striking a deal means getting in bed with the enemy.

Battling between distrust and desire, Alexis and Marshall give in to a passionate, forbidden affair. They know if they're discovered the consequences would be bad---it's just hard to remember that when being together feels so, so good.

Review
I wasn't sure how I would be able to be okay with the couple in this book. If you've read So Twisted, which I highly recommend so you get the whole story, you'll know why this pairing makes no sense. I had faith, though, and was not disappointed. I was able to understand Alexis  bit and even like her. I liked her and Marshall together even though I knew it could not end well. I loved the story and was happy with how things came together.

Excerpt

“Al?” he muttered.
And then it wasn’t about what was right or wrong, or needing or wanting.
It was about me.
It was about him.
Us.
I rotated my head to bring my eyes back to his.
And then there was nothing else to say.
No more questions.
No more answers.
His lips touched mine, so tentative at first to gauge if I would kiss him back. I did, not because I wanted to, but because I needed to. We sighed against each other’s lips as heat rose all around us. One kiss, and we retreated only slightly, glancing into each other’s eyes for reassurance, before our mouths, our lips, were back where we both wanted them to be.
On each other.
My hands wrapped around his neck to bring him even closer, as I was backed up into my car. His body pressed against mine, and with no place for me to run to, I melted. Our lips parted simultaneously, our tongues meeting together with mutual moans. His hands slipped around the small space behind me, gripping the fabric at the back of my uniform dress in his fists, before releasing and moving them up and down.
I tasted what was left of my cupcake creation on his tongue, the hint of bourbon and chocolate, and it made something move inside me.
All I could think was this wasn’t just a good kiss. This was an amazing kiss—a kiss that I’d remember. It wasn’t crazed or rushed, but it wasn’t tentative. It was desire and longing coming together in a movie-worthy kiss sequence.
He moved. I moved. Together. Perfectly.
Cars passed by, alarms went off, and the conversations from people walking down the street behind us, going about their lives like they had no idea the world was imploding, were all there.
But I heard nothing.
It was only his hands in my hair, his mouth on my neck, and his panting breath against my skin. My fingers dug into his hair, yanking him closer, but with no room for him to move, he nudged my legs open with his knee and stepped in between them.
He paused for a moment and I startled.
I asked, “Is this okay?” as I continued to stare at his lips.
We were out in the open, outside the bar, for all to see. Any of his employees or people who knew me could’ve seen.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
A question with a question, and there was no right answer. Logic and reason would bring me to one direction. His pleading eyes that my own had drifted to would lead me to another.
“Yes,” I whispered.
I wanted more. I wanted him.
All of him.
I wanted his words against my lips and his hands on my bare skin. I wanted to trace the tip of my tongue across every one of his tattoos and know their story. I wanted us to kiss all the bad memories away and remember how good it was to be wanted.
And as I looked at him straight on, feeling him hard against my leg, I knew he wanted the same.

Ria Parkar is Bollywood's favorite Ice Princess--beautiful, poised, and scandal-proof--until one impulsive act threatens to expose her destructive past. Traveling home to Chicago for her cousin's wedding offers a chance to diffuse the coming media storm and find solace in family, food, and outsized celebrations that are like one of her vibrant movies come to life. But it also means confronting Vikram Jathar.

Ria and Vikram spent childhood summers together, a world away from Ria's exclusive boarding school in Mumbai. Their friendship grew seamlessly into love--until Ria made a shattering decision. As far as Vikram is concerned, Ria sold her soul for stardom and it's taken him years to rebuild his life. But beneath his pent-up anger, their bond remains unchanged. And now, among those who know her best, Ria may find the courage to face the secrets she's been guarding for everyone else's benefit--and a chance to stop acting and start living.

Rich with details of modern Indian-American life, here is a warm, sexy, and witty story of love, family, and the difficult choices that arise in the name of both.

My Thoughts:
I loved this book so much. I was intrigued from the very first page. It was a puzzle that I couldn't wait to work out. Heartbreaking. I could feel for the characters. Just wanted them to be able to work things out, though things seemed impossible for Ria. I loved reading about her family, the aunties, and the wedding preparations. This was a beautiful, emotional book. I wish I hadn't waited so long to read it.

Review: So Screwed by Melissa Marino

Description:
He's charming, wicked, and handsome . . . and she needs to stay away

For Evelyn Owen, work comes first. Being a wedding planner to the city's elite fills her nights and weekends, and she doesn't have time for distractions. Especially in the form of a sexy bartender with killer dimples . . .

Abel Matthews knows how to serve the ladies. But lately, the only woman he wants is just out of reach. That's because Evelyn has already been warned about his playboy ways. Still, there's something about her that makes Abel want more than a quick fling.

Evelyn knows that she shouldn't trust Abel. Yet she's seen a side of him no one else knows, and she can't turn away. But Abel is hiding something from her . . . and if he doesn't confess soon, it will tear them apart.

My Thoughts:
I stayed up too late to finish this one. I couldn't stop reading until everything was okay. I loved Abel. There's more to him than he normally lets people see. Evelyn was fantastic as well. She's very focused and strong and won't let Abel get away with anything. They just fit so well, though they both had their insecurities. And keeping secrets never ends well. I just loved these two together. I read So Twisted and thought they were great characters. While each book stands alone, I highly recommend that one as well.

Tempest in the Highlands by May McGoldrick - Blog Tour Review and Excerpt

Description:

Miranda MacDonnell is on the run. When she inherited a mysterious relic from her mother, she had no idea the dangers it would bring. Now hunted by a relentless foe who will stop at nothing to find her, she has one choice: stow away on the ship of the notorious privateer, Black Hawk.

Rob Hawkins, the half-English privateer known as Black Hawk, has a mission from the Tudor king to find and kill the rogue commander, Sir Ralph Evers. To complete his quest, Hawk must find Miranda, a young woman Evers is pursuing. Caught in a tempest, he is shipwrecked with a "boy" who demonstrates an uncanny ability for saving him. Cast away on the mysterious Isle of the Dead, Hawk realizes that the "boy" traveling with him is actually Miranda MacDonnell and having her means that Evers will come to him. What begins as a ploy —using her as bait—soon changes, however, as he falls in love with her.

Ancient forces are at work, drawing the four possessors of the relic’s power to the Isle of the Dead in the Outer Hebrides for a final battle where good must overcome the forces of evil in this spectacular finale to the Scottish Relic Trilogy.

Excerpt:

One moment, Miranda was gasping for more air. The next, her very existence depended on how close she could get to him. The touch of his lips freed her mind and made her body soar. The tension gripping her limbs and her lungs melted away in an instant. She shivered involuntarily and her arms tightened around his neck.

Hawk’s mouth moved back and forth over her burning lips, urging them to open. Surrendering to his silent demand, she parted her lips. She heard the groan deep in his throat as he took a fistful of her hair and his tongue plunged deep into the soft recesses of her mouth.

A silent thrill of desire raced through her. She’d never been kissed by a man before. But right now, all fears were forgotten. The trap in which they found themselves became trivial. Miranda allowed the rising hunger she had for him to erupt within her.

Lost in the seductive play of his tongue, the heat of his embrace, and his roaming hand, she responded with passion.

He lifted her higher in his arms and pulled her legs around his hips.

Her body ached for his touch, her heart pounded, and her mind whirled in the closeness of his embrace. Miranda gave another low moan of surrender as he deepened the kiss.

She didn’t know for how long they were lost in the kiss, but when he tore his mouth away, he was as breathless as she had been.

“This is a dangerous game we’ve started,” he said.

She understood what he was saying. It was impossible to not feel his erection pressing against her. Unwrapping her legs from his waist, she tried to float away, but his arm around her waist kept her close.

“I don’t mean to scare you off,” he said. “But you’re too beautiful, too tempting, and I’m a man.” Hawk released his hold on the wall, and they floated together. His gaze never left her face. “But I want you to know you can trust me.”

My Thoughts:
I thoroughly enjoyed this final installment in the Scottish Relic Trilogy. Miranda's mother sent her away with her part of the stone to escape Evers. She meets up with Rob when she attempts to save his life and they end up stranded on an island together. Rob thinks she is a boy who works on his ship. They're both great characters and it is fun as they get to know each other and discover one another's secrets, and Miranda saves Rob's life on several occasions. In this book, the four stones are finally brought together and we find out what happens. I'm just a little disappointed that this is the last book.

Review: Her Last Breath by J.A. Schneider

Description:
A chilling psychological thriller about a woman caught between two men...
Mari Gill wakes to horror in a strange apartment next to a murdered man, and can't remember the night before. Accused of murder, she feels torn between her husband, a successful defense attorney, and a mysterious, kind man who wants to help. Can she trust either of them - or even her friends? Detective Kerri Blasco battles her police bosses believing Mari is innocent...but is she?
My Thoughts:

This one grabbed me from the beginning when Mari wakes up covered in blood next to a dead body. Kept me guessing, right up to the great twist at the end. Kerri is a great detective with excellent hunches. She thinks Mari is being set up and has to prove it. Mari is paranoid and doesn't know who to trust. An excellent read to the very end.

Review: Gathering Ashes by Michael Shean

Description:
Four years have passed since Bobbi January learned about the existence of the Yathi race and its plans for humanity. Since then, she ‘s become more than a career data thief or anticorporate provacateur - she’s the leader of a force of humans and reformed Yathi hosts dedicated to fighting the aliens wherever they can be found. Hers is a war fought in the dark, and like all wars, it has been costly. Friends have died, others have soured, and the rebellion that started out so strongly has broken into two embittered camps. When Bobbi is nearly killed by a surprise strike after a successful mission, it looks as though the Yathi may be the least of her problems.

Meanwhile, Thomas Walken, held prisoner by the Yathi since his capture six years previous, awakens. Escaping from an alien installation, he must grapple with a body - and perhaps a mind - that is not his own, and try to reclaim the humanity which the Yathi’s have so vigorously tried to scrub from his mind. Hunted by the Mother of Systems, he aims to reconnect with Bobbi, but will she accept him as a man, or denounce him as a creation of the enemy?

Packed with action, intrigue, and dark futuristic thrills, Gathering Ashes transports you to the very edge of a dangerously uncertain future.

My Thoughts:
This was a long one but still managed to leave me wanting more. This is the third book in the series and you definitely want to start from the beginning. There are some very compelling, complex characters. Bobbi is my favorite. We see a bit of her wit in this one, but mainly she is trying to keep her group together. She's a leader now and a good one. She wants to take out the Yathi, but she'll also do anything to keep her people safe. And now Tom Walken is back, which is great, but he's something else now, and he's having trouble coming to terms with it himself. Overall an exciting read with plenty of big, futuristic weapons, explosions, and deaths. I certainly hope to see the next book soon.

Review: So Twisted by Melissa Marino

Description:

Sometimes it feels good to be a little bad.

Callie has found the perfect job. As nanny for a single dad and his adorable daughter, she can pay off her student loans and live in a nice house in the heart of Chicago. There's just one problem-her new boss. Definitely no dad bod here. Just six-plus feet of raw, sexual energy. Whoever heard of a dad being so hot?

From the sparkle in his daughter's eyes, Aaron can see that hiring Callie was a good decision. But Callie's breathtaking smile and long legs have him thinking about his own needs. Aaron knows it's a bad idea to get involved with the nanny, but it's been years since anyone has captivated him like Callie.

When living under the same roof proves too tempting to resist, Callie and Aaron discover a mind-blowing passion unlike anything either has experienced. But with a curious child and a nosy family in the mix, their secret, no-strings fling soon turns into a twisted, tangled knot . . .

The Bad Behavior Series:
So Twisted
So Screwed
So Wicked

My Thoughts:

Aaron is the hot single dad who needs needs someone to help out with his daughter. Callie needs a better job to help her finish school. The attraction is there from the beginning but they both decided they can be professional. Of course that can't last when they're living together.

This was one of my favorites back in the fan fiction days. It has clearly been rewritten and I think the story is even better. A perfect combination of heat, humor, and heart. I absolutely loved it. There are some fantastic characters and I can't wait for the next two books!

Contemporary Romance Review: Refrain by Kennedy Ryan

Description:
People dream of a love that runs deep. So deep it feels like it's always been with you, just waiting for the person who'll own your heart and soul forever. So few ever find it, but for Rhyson Gray and Kai Pearson, happily ever after was only the beginning...

One of the biggest rock stars in the world and one of the brightest rising stars make a life together. Sometimes it's glamour-filled days and blissed out nights, but it's mostly staying true in the too-bright glare of the spotlight. It's long stretches where the road is lonely and the work is hard. It's living in a love that's the safest place you know even while danger lurks at your door.

Book 3 of The Soul series is an emotionally-charged epic conclusion that had to be told and should not be missed for fans of this series and this couple!

My Thoughts:

This is the continuation of Rhys and Kai’s story. If you read the other two and loved them you'll probably want to read this one. There were a few tears, tons of steam, and even some sweetness. I enjoyed getting more of Rhys and Kai. I am looking forward to Bristol and Grip's story.

Paranormal Review: Stifled by Rainy Kaye

Description:
Dimitri would like nothing more than to live a low-key life in Naples, Italy. His girlfriend, Syd, has other plans.

After three months of researching, she is positive she has found a jinn on a killing spree in San Diego, California. Since Syd gave Dimitri the one thing he thought was out of reach, he feels obligated to use his ill-gained talents for her cause.

A few hours back in the US proves that Dimitri and Syd didn't quite make the clean escape they had thought. As they trail the elusive jinn, someone else trails them. What should have been a simple trip to confirm once and for all if the jinn are living among humans, instead reveals a community keeping dark secrets.

Unfortunately for Dim, the only way out is in.

My Thoughts:

You really should read Summoned first. Dimitri was freed from the genie bond by his girlfriend Sydney and they are living in Italy. But now she is pulling him back in when she finds a jinn killing in the U.S. Dimitri reluctantly agrees to help her. I loved the story and the characters. Dimitri's point of view is very entertaining. He is pretty funny. He used to kill and steal for a living but he was never very good at it. He is always getting hurt. I enjoyed both books.
