Between The Sheets by Molly O'Keefe - Blog Tour Excerpt

BETWEEN THE SHEETS by Molly O’Keefe

July 2014
Boys of Bishop, book #3

Book Summary:

Perfect for readers of Susan Mallery and Rachel Gibson, Between the Sheets is Molly O’Keefe’s final book in the Boys of Bishop trilogy, featuring a sizzling romance between a sexy motorcycle bad boy and the girl next door who can’t resist him.

After years of running, Wyatt Svenson has now parked himself in Bishop, Arkansas, trying to do the right thing and parent a son he didn’t even know he had until recently. Over six feet tall and packed with muscles and power, Ty likes to get his hands dirty, fixing his motorcycle at night and keeping his mind away from the mistakes he’s made. Then his pretty neighbor shows up on his driveway, doesn’t bother to introduce herself, and complains about the noise. First impression? She should loosen up. Funny that she turns out to be his son’s elementary school art teacher—and the only one willing to help his troubled boy. Ty needs her. In more ways than one.

Though Shelby Monroe is safe in her structured life, she is drawn to Ty’s bad-boy edge and rugged sexuality. What if she just lets it all go: her worries about her mother, her fear of heartbreak, and her tight self control? What if she grabs Ty and takes a ride on the wild side? “What if” becomes reality—intense, exhilarating . . . and addictive. But Ty wants more than a secret affair. He wants it all with Shelby. But will she take a chance and open her heart? Ty is determined to convince Shelby to take the biggest risk of her life: on him.

Excerpt:

January 8

Heads were bent over work and the room was silent but for the scratch of pencil and crayon over paper. She walked up and down the aisles until she got to the far corner where Casey, who was bent so far over his desk she couldn’t see his paper, sketched furiously. His pencil was a short, bitten-off thing, probably salvaged from the broken pencil bin Mrs. Jordal had for kids who kept forgetting pencils.

“Do you want some colored pencils?” she asked. “Or crayons? I have some.”

“I’m fine,” he said without looking up, without taking a break. Without giving her a chance to see what he was working on.

A couple more kids raised their hands to ask questions, and she had to finally move Scott to the far side of the room because he wouldn’t stop talking to his friend John. Casey didn’t look up. She set a sharp pencil down on the edge of his desk but he ignored it.

“You have five minutes left,” she said at almost the exact moment Mrs. Jordal came back in. Shelby took her own pictures down and tucked them back in the bag. In the kindergarten class after this they were going to start a finding-shapes-in-nature exercise, which was basically just an excuse to get them outside and moving around.

“Time’s up,” she said. “Hand in your pages. I’ll see you next Wednesday and we’ll keep working on this.”

Students flooded up from their desks, a giant wave of kids who smelled like graphite and wax crayon. Casey didn’t meet her eyes and handed her his page facedown. “It’s nice to meet you, Casey,” she said, and he shook his hair out of his eyes in that weird, totally practiced and ineffective Justin Bieber way.

“Yeah,” he said and shuffled back to his desk. He was tall, really tall. The tallest kid in the class by at least a few inches. She hadn’t noticed that when he was slouching at his desk.

She gathered up the pages and grabbed her bag and empty cat coffee cup and went back to the office for another cup of coffee before heading to kindergarten.

The new kid forgotten for the moment.

Top Ten Inspirations For Never Been Kissed

1. Jerome Kaino – from the New Zealand All Blacks inspired my hero Brody. Not only is he just so beautiful, the way he plays rugby is pretty inspiring, too. Kaino is not a flashy player, he’s a guy who hands out big hits, and takes big hits so someone else can get the try. He’s solid, he’s strong. He’s the guy you want at your side. All that quiet integrity is something I really tried to infuse into Brody.

2. Hostage  --  I was nursing my daughter, stuck on my couch and glued to the story of Paul and Rachel Chandler and their ordeal at the hands of Somali Pirates. This book is a really interesting account of their year as hostages.  This book informed Ashley’s experience with the pirates.

    3. My cousins – my cousins actually inspired a lot of aspects of this book.  My uncle started a    hospital in Kijabe, Kenya and my cousins grew up there.  Three of my cousins have gone on to build schools and hospitals and dig wells in other countries in Africa. They are amazing people, doing amazing work. Their stories have inspired a lot of Ashley’s experience.

        4. The ribs that Cora and Sean make in the book are this recipe:

5. My neighborhood and friends – I live in a culturally diverse neighborhood in Toronto and I realized that my community and life, actually, wasn’t reflected in the books I write. So, I tried to change that in Never Been Kissed.

6. Sweet Wind, Wild Wind by Elizabeth Lowell and Remember Me by Laura Moore – I am a total sucker for the books where the heroine, usually young and naive tells the hero that she loves him, only to have him ruthlessly reject her (ruthlessly reject is always on the back cover copy) and then, years later the heroine and the hero are thrown together again. The heroine is vulnerable but angry. The hero is regretful and in love.  I love those books. Lowell’s was one of the first ones I’ve ever read and Laura’s was the last one – I read it in an airport and thought, I want to write one of these.

7. This is the brisket that Sean and Cora make:

8. This is the chili Sean and Cora make with that brisket: http://www.finecooking.com/recipes/brisket-and-bean-chili.aspx

9. The Pour House – Sean’s bar is inspired by a bar in the town where I grew up. It shut down before I could ever enjoy it, but from what everyone said – it was about as dive bar as a dive bar could be. And I liked the idea of a young guy trying to fix it up, working hard against the bar’s reputation to bring in new clientele. And, truth be told, I have ALWAYS wanted to have an apartment above a bar. No idea why…

10. The West Wing – I was rewatching the entire series while writing Never Been Kissed, Indecent Proposal (Harrison’s story) and a short story that I wrote for the Summer Rain Anthology.  High paid escorts, Somali pirates, dirty politics and back alley negotiations and international weapons deals are not usually a part of my books – but somehow watching West Wing – they all managed to slip in!

Top Ten List by Molly O'Keefe

Favorite Historical Western Romance Authors

1. Elizabeth Lowell - Only His, Only Mine, Only You, Only Love, Autumn Love, Winter Fire. I guess you always love your first, the best. Lowell's books were among my first romances and remain my absolute favorites.

2. Maggie Osbourne - Silver Lining, The Promise of Jenny Jones, The Wives of Bowie Stone, I Do, I Do, I Do. Oh, how I miss Maggie Osborne. Really miss her. Osborne wrote the best heroines. To tell you the truth, I don't actually remember the heroes but the heroines and the depictions of female friendships totally stand out.

3. LaVyrle Spencer - The Gamble, The Endearment. Spencer wrote a bunch of Historical Westerns and I know people love The Fulfillment - but I do not love love triangle. But The Endearment and The Gamble are amazing books. So amazing, I now need to reread them.

4. Jo Goodman - Never Love A Lowman, Marry Me, If His Kiss is Wicked. Goodman's books are gems. Slow-burning stories with deeply-drawn characters that I really adore.

5. Teresa Medeiros - Nobody's Darling. I really don't know why Medeiros didn't write more western historicals. This book about Billy Charming is on the top shelf of my keeper bookcase. Funny and sweet and sexy - totally love it.

6. Susan Johnson - The Braddock-Black series might have been my first experience with what readers call "crack" books. Incredibly over the top, unbelievable but totally unputdownable. I realized that I've never read the last book in this series and - you can imagine, I will be rectifying that immediately.

7. Lori Austin - Beauty and The Bounty Hunter, An Outlaw in Wonderland, The Lone Warrior. Austin is writing really intricately-plotted books covering fascinating aspects of the West. Her heroines are smart and clever and struggling. The research in incredible.

8. Catherine Anderson - Annie's Song. If you haven't read this book and consider yourself a fan of romance - you're missing out. Surprising and thoughtful on every level.

9. Patricia Gaffney - Crooked Hearts. Both characters are con artists. It's got adventure, it's funny and seriously romantic.

10. You tell me your favorite western historical author, or book.
