Describe your ideal writing space. How does it compare to reality?
Great question! That is not something I've put a lot of thought into, but I think my ideal writing space is somewhere that is quiet and doesn't provide a lot of distractions. As to how that compares to reality, my office meets those requirements perfectly. As long as I can turn off my phone, kick the cats out and turn off social media, I can get into that "writing zone."
What is the first story you remember writing and what was it about?
The first thing I really remember writing was a music video for the Duran Duran song "Is There Anyone Out There." I wrote it all out by-hand. It was a story about a man who fell in love with an alien. Even then, I loved science fiction and that song inspired that vision for me at the time. I can't remember how old I was, but probably early teens.
Name a memorable book from your childhood. Why is it memorable?
My absolute favorite books from my childhood were those by Madeleine L'Engle. As far as I'm concerned, her "A Wrinkle In Time" series are by far the best YA fiction ever written. The main character, Meg, was a young girl who got to do incredibly wonderful things and was strong and smart. I related to her and wanted to be her.
If you could ask any writer (living or dead) a question, who would it be and what would you ask?
I have always wondered where Neil Gaiman's ideas come from. He has this fascinating way of seeing the world and can make ordinary objects seem extraordinary. I would love to also know about his writing process and how he takes a basic idea and turns it into a story.
If you could pick any of the worlds or characters you have created, which would you want to visit or spend a day with?
I love the world that Alex inhabits in "Zeus, Inc." It's slightly futuristic and has a lot of great technology that we're now just imagining. It's sort of like our world, but better. But not only does it have all this wonderful tech, there's still some magic to it, too.
What is one thing you like to do when you are not reading or writing?
I am an uber-geek and nerd and discovered cosplay about four years ago. Recently, I've decided to create my first costume from scratch. I'm really enjoying the process. I've never considered myself a crafty person, but it's been a lot of fun.
What are you currently working on?
I just completed the final draft of the follow-up to "Zeus, Inc.," "The Curse of Hekate." It's currently being edited. I have also been writing the first book of my science fiction trilogy, titled "The Book of Revelations." It's a massive story, with a lot of characters and locations and is probably the most ambitious thing I've ever tried. I have a few short stories in the works, although I'm focusing most of my time on the new novel. I also work for DVICE, which is an online science/technology magazine - I write at least one article every day for that.
