Review: Her Last Breath by J.A. Schneider

Description:
A chilling psychological thriller about a woman caught between two men...
Mari Gill wakes to horror in a strange apartment next to a murdered man, and can't remember the night before. Accused of murder, she feels torn between her husband, a successful defense attorney, and a mysterious, kind man who wants to help. Can she trust either of them - or even her friends? Detective Kerri Blasco battles her police bosses believing Mari is innocent...but is she?
My Thoughts:

This one grabbed me from the beginning when Mari wakes up covered in blood next to a dead body. Kept me guessing, right up to the great twist at the end. Kerri is a great detective with excellent hunches. She thinks Mari is being set up and has to prove it. Mari is paranoid and doesn't know who to trust. An excellent read to the very end.

Review: Fear Dreams by J.A. Schneider

Description:

Liddy Barron, an artist, was injured in a hit-and-run accident that left her with recurring nightmares, gaps in her memory, and an increasing obsession in the disappearance of a coed named Sasha Perry. Insecure and nervous, Liddy's turmoil grows as she begins seeing ghostly images. Her husband Paul tries to help but suspects it's just her imagination...while intuitive Detective Kerri Blasco, also obsessed with young Sasha's disappearance, senses that Liddy may have a key to solving the case, and tries to unravel the shocking truth of what really haunts her.

My Thoughts:

Liddy is recovering from an accident. she is having nightmares and seeing things. She's not sure if she's crazy or why she is seeing what she is seeing. Kerri is a detective who is trying to find a missing woman whose case is being closed. Their stories connect. There is a great build up. Lots of twists in this story. Kept me guessing. Excellent read. Recommend for psychological thriller lovers.

Review: Every Breath You Take by Bianca Sloane

Description:

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Natalie Scott goes jogging along Chicago’s lakefront. She likes foreign films, cinnamon gum and strawberry yogurt. She smells like sunflowers in the summer and roses in the winter.
These are just a few of the things Natalie’s stalker knows about her.
In fact, he knows everything about her.
In one brutal act of violence, Natalie’s stalker will reveal himself to her, imprisoning her in the process, determined to own her body and soul. Now trapped in a madman’s web, Natalie will find herself in a terrifying battle of wills where the only way to survive is to beat the monster at his own game. . .

My Thoughts:
This one is dark and disturbing but so well-written that I couldn't stop reading. It's one of those books that will have you so on edge that you get irritated with life for interrupting your reading time. The suspense is so well done that even when things were going well, I had to keep reading, just knowing something bad was coming. If you can handle reading about rape, this one will keep you up well past bedtime, biting your nails.

My Rating: *****

Rape is a major part of the story.

Review: Kaleidoscope World by Tomica Scavina

Kaleidoscope World by Tomica Scavina

Description:
A collector of kaleidoscopes and lousy relationships, Dahlia Kasper leaves her possessive alcoholic mother and moves from New York to Barcelona. In search of lost bits of her childhood, she starts living in an apartment where her father was murdered when she was four. As soon as she enters the apartment, strange things begin to happen.

Her favorite kaleidoscope becomes a gateway to another dimension where she encounters a ghost of a famous physicist from the 19th century who tries to persuade her that reality is like a moth-eaten sweater - full of holes. He needs her to help him plug up these holes and save the world from vanishing, while the only thing Dahlia really wants to save is her sanity.

This is just a part of Dahlia's problems. An elderly cello-playing neighbor turns her emotional world upside down and her longing for lost home takes her further than she ever imagined she could go. To collect all the scattered kaleidoscope-bits of her life together, Dahlia needs to go through an intense inner transformation that takes courage and a sharp sense of humor.

My Thoughts:
Dahlia is an interesting character. She has gone back to her childhood apartment to get away from her mother and try to figure out her life. This book is very different. There were some very bizarre parts, but just couldn't stop reading. Interesting psychological thriller with a mystery.

Review: Roadrage by M.J. Johnson

Roadrage by M.J. Johnson

Description:
Gil Harper is travelling home in severe weather conditions when he encounters another car on a deserted motorway. The other driver provokes him into a dangerous race at high speed. Although deeply shaken by the experience, Gil eventually gets away and completes his journey safely.

A short time afterwards there begins a series of apparently unrelated events. What seems at first to be a vindictive game escalates into a terrifying ordeal with lethal consequences, not only for Gil, but for all those he loves and cares about.

Trouble isn't always personal.

My Thoughts:

A fantastically well-told story that grabbed me from the first chapter. Gil is just trying to drive home when another car on the highway starts messing with him.  Parts of the story are from the point of view of the bad guy and gives you a glimpse into his head. This did a great job of ratcheting up the suspense and made me want to keep reading. It showed just how crazy he was and still kept you wondering. Definitely creepy. There is a bit of a romance, which was a nice plus, but didn't overpower the thriller aspect of the story. I enjoyed the characters as well. A scary good book. I highly recommend this one.

Review: Penthouse Man by Kea Noli

Penthouse Man by Kea Noli

Description:
A socialite lives in a world of fantasy as she controls her
husband and her sister.
Stephanie loves the world of fantasy. Trix loves the real world.
The sisters battle for control of a lingerie company . . . for pajamas and lingerie . . . and for the Penthouse Man.

Reality catches up when Trix reads a letter that destroys Stephanie's power. Trix is in love with her sister's husband--the Penthouse Man.

The Penthouse Man is nowhere to be seen but his presence is felt everywhere.

Controversy: A sister is in love with her sister’s husband.

My Thoughts:
This is a novella and was a quick read. I was almost put off by the fact that the woman is in love with her sister's husband because I like nice, neat romances with everything tied up in a bow. But I gave it a shot anyway. I like to try something different every now and then. This was full of family drama and sibling rivalry. The characters all have distinct personalities and motivations. There are plenty of questions to make you wonder. An interesting, psychological read.
