Author Interview: J.D. Faver

Today please welcome J.D. Faver to WiLoveBooks. I have reviewed several of her books here: On IceBad MedicineBad Karma, and Bad Vibes.

J.D. Faver lives near Houston, Texas. She writes contemporary romance and mystery/suspense. Although she writes daily, she still finds time to enjoy family and friends. She also enjoys cooking, gardening, and painting.
She is active in several writer's organizations in the area. She belongs to National RWA and is a member of all three Houston area chapters. She is owned by two cats and a small, yappy rescue dog.
She would rather be sailing or on a beach somewhere, but if she can't do either of those things, she would just as soon write.

Describe your ideal writing space. How does it compare to reality?
When I'm writing, which is every day, I sort of zone out. I take my laptop outside to write on my patio, and I also stretch out in my recliner with my dog on the footrest. I write sitting in front of my PC, which is housed in a huge oak roll-top desk. I write on my netbook anyplace I happen to be. I always have that with me and a flash drive stuck in my purse with whatever story I'm working on at the time.

What is the first story you remember writing and what was it about?
When I was in the second grade, Sister Anastasia encouraged my writing. She gave me a package of colored chalk and let me stay in at recess so I could draw the scenery on the 3 blackboards. So naturally, I wrote 3-act plays. I had to hand write out the scripts for my fellow actors. It was a reader's theater, so we read the parts. I wrote a new play every couple of weeks. I know people think of a Catholic education as being stern, and having your fingers smacked with rulers, but it wasn't like that at all. I sometimes think of Sister Anastasia and how she drew the best out of each child.

Name a memorable book from your childhood. Why is it memorable?
I can't honestly remember anyone ever reading to me at home. I learned to read early, and maybe this was the reason. My 4th grade teacher read to us every afternoon for a while before the final bell rang. That was magic time. She read Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew. But I think I enjoyed the Anne of Green Gables stories most of all. I read Little Women on my own and really identified with Jo.

If you could ask any writer (living or dead) a question, who would it be and what would you ask?
I have so many favorites, but probably Eudora Welty would be the one I would most love to spend time with. I adore the quirky, flawed characters she created and the way she managed to saturate each scene with so much setting. You could smell the magnolias and hear bees buzzing. I would probably ask her how she developed such depth in her writing.

If you could pick any of the worlds or characters you have created, which would you want to visit or spend a day with?
I would love to go to Alaska, the setting for part of ON ICE. I would want to go in the summer, of course. Not a fan of bitter cold.

What is one thing you like to do when you are not reading or writing?
I love to cook and preparing meals for my family and friends gives me great pleasure. I have published one cookbook and the second is ready to go. I first wrote a huge cookbook for my daughter-in-law a few years ago. I gathered all the family recipes for several generations back, and gave them to her as a gift. I also gave a copy to my daughter. Now the family recipes are captured for posterity.

What are you currently working on?
I'm working on two novels at the same time. I find it easier to do this because if I write myself into a corner on one, I can go to the other and keep writing until some brilliant solution comes to mind. One of my current projects is BAD DREAMS, the 4th romantic thriller in The Edge of Texas series. At the same time, I'm working on the 2nd YA fantasy. Hope to get them both finished before Christmas.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions!
Thank you so much for your interest in my projects, Brinda.

Reading order for The Edge of Texas series (which I highly recommend if you like romantic suspense):
1. Bad Medicine
2. Bad Karma
3. Bad Vibes
4. Bad Dreams (on the way)

Review: Bad Vibes by J.D. Faver

BAD VIBES (The Edge of Texas Book 3) by J.D. Faver

Description:
When government agent Mike “The Iceman” Burke invades her South Padre Island turf, Deputy Darla Calhoun is assigned as liaison officer to his team. Her skills as a sniper come in handy when a gang of human traffickers strikes close to home, kidnapping local women including her best friend. Darla is recovering from her husband’s suicide and trying to be a good parent to her twin sons. The ICE assignment takes her out of her misery and plunges her into a dangerous mission and a steamy affair. Mike and Darla tear up and down the Intracoastal Waterway in search of the kidnappers and the captive women while Rafael and Javier conduct their own investigation. Will they rescue the captive women or will the kidnappers slaughter them as they have done in the past? Two teams race to find the answers before it's too late.

My Thoughts:Another great book from J.D. Faver. This is Book 3 in The Edge of Texas series. Book 1 is Bad Medicine, Rafael and Chloe's story and book 2 is Bad Karma, Zach and Sky's and Javier and Cassie's story. I would recommend reading the other books in the series first, only because we get so much from the points of view of other characters that it would help to know them a bit first. I guess it's  not necessary, I just like them all. In this book we have Darla the sniper. I have always liked her character. She teams up with federal agent Mike Burke to bust a human trafficking operation. Their first meeting is fun and there is plenty of tension and heat between them as they work together. This book is heavy on suspense but still has plenty of romance and some lighter moments.

Review: Bad Karma by J.D. Faver

Bad Karma by J.D. Faver

Description:
With a vengeful stalker on her trail and a hurricane in the Gulf, Skyler Danforth relocates to South Padre Island only to find a new danger when her neighbor, Zach Bailey takes her heart by storm. Sky is a nurse and after two attempts on her life, moves to South Padre to live with her baby sister Cassie, a brilliant prodigy, in hopes of eluding her stalker. Cassie is in over her brainy head when a local heart-breaker and fire fighter, Javier Rios pursues her. He is attracted to her natural innocence and beauty but thinks she is only a restaurant delivery girl. He falls hard for the geeky, Master’s degree wielding Marine Biologist. Sky tries to fit in and be patient when she realizes that she is falling fast for Zach but he is on the rebound and cautious. When the storm comes ashore and the island is evacuated, Sky and Cassie are trapped in the fortress-like hospital with a woman in labor, a heart attack victim and the stalker. Locked out, Zach and Javi use their own unique talents to breach the impenetrable medical facility, each sacrificing something of great personal value in the process. The easy going Zach is forced to step way outside his comfort zone and fight to protect the woman he loves.

My Thoughts:
Bad Karma is another great book by J.D. Faver. I think this is my favorite so far. The tension starts on the first page, with Sky's stalker lurking around. Even when things are going great, there is always this threat hanging around in the background. And this book has a bonus: two love stories in one. Both Danforth sisters find love in their new home.
This is book two in the Borderland Series. The characters from Bad Medicine are back, but don't worry if you haven't read it yet because all relevant information is included. You don't really miss anything. Bad Karma has the perfect balance of romance, suspense, and humor. I recommend it and I look forward to the next!

Review: Bad Medicine by J.D. Faver

Bad Medicine by J.D. Faver

Description:
Unable to escape her past, Chloe Palmer returns to the Texas coast for her murdered father’s funeral and to face Rafael Solis, the man she left behind. Rafael never gave up hoping for Chloe’s return. She inherits her father’s shrimp boat and irascible crew, enabling her to make a living. Rafael’s passion breaks down her emotional barriers, but her impetuous nature draws her into a cruel vortex where she runs afoul of old and new enemies. Previous rivalries emerge, pitting Rafael against the heir-apparent to a crime dynasty. With the body count rising, Rafael and Chloe battle an infatuated but vicious drug lord, kidnappers, and a twisted curandero (Mexican healer). Will they survive the violence and be able to forge a life together?

My Thoughts:
When Chloe comes back to town for her father's funeral, she and Rafael pick up where they left off. At first, I wasn't sure what to think of Chloe, but started to understand her more as her story came out. Rafael is such a sweet guy. He still loves her, even though she left him years ago. He is also investigating her father's murder. This is a sweet second-chance romance blended with murder and suspense. A fantastic combination.

Review: On Ice by J.D. Faver

On Ice by J.D. Faver

Description:
A terrified woman erases her past to escape her abusive husband. Taking her children, she disappears from Texas only to reinvent herself as a teacher in a remote Alaskan village. She fights to survive the harsh environment, while ever mindful of the danger stalking her. A complication emerges in the form of her new boss who is unaware of her entanglement and pursues her with a passion. Hungry for a father figure, her young children immediately take to him, but she is haunted by the cruel man who battered her. Can a good man heal her scars and gain her trust? As she evolves in her new role, she becomes stronger as a person. Back in Texas, her sister draws the abuser's fury and becomes his new victim. When her past catches up with her, she is not the same woman who ran away. She puts her life on the line to protect her children, but will she survive the wrath of a sociopath bent on revenge?

My Thoughts:
I picked this up free for Kindle and I really enjoyed it. When we meet Rene she is running from an abusive husband along with her two young children. With the help of her sister, she sets out to make a new life for herself, but she lives in fear that he will find them and kill her.  The point of view shifts to her sister Maddy and the psycho husband so we see what is going on back home, though Rene has no idea. There are many great characters, both in Alaska and back in Texas, that add a bit of fun to the story. The whole time you're wondering when the husband will catch up to her and what he will do when he finds her. A great read if you love romance (that is not too explicit) and suspense that keeps you turning pages.
